Mengo Hospital was
founded in 1897 in Kampala, and is the oldest hospital in Uganda. It currently
serves as an urban community hospital that provides modern medical care. Mengo
Hospital provides comprehensive care including radiology, obstetrics,
dentistry, orthopedics, and surgery. Additionally, Mengo Hospital provides
critical training and education to health professionals through its various
programs in midwifery and nursing, health sciences, and laboratory technology.
Mengo Hospital also has a dedicated research and development team that works to
find new solutions to health issues in Uganda.

Job Summary:  The Laboratory Manager will oversee and co-ordinate all laboratory
operations so as to ensure effective support is provided to internal and
external clinical care teams.  The position will oversee the
continued and consistent delivery of quality, health and safety standards in
line with GCLP accredited QMS. The position will be responsible for safety and
for the establishment of standard operating procedures. Managerial duties will
include scheduling of staff, ordering supplies, quality control standards,
overall oversight of laboratory processes, adherence to GCLP, and overseeing
maintenance of safety standards.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The suitable candidate must hold a
    Masters’ degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences and a Bachelor’s degree in
    Medical Laboratory Technology, Laboratory Science or equivalent.
  • At least six years of experience working
    in a medical laboratory with at least 4 (four) years’ experience as a
    Laboratory Manager or similar management experience.
  • Knowledge of GCLPs, QMS and other
    relevant best practices and standards
  • Experience in the use of Laboratory
    Information Management systems
  • Computer literacy with proficiency in
    Microsoft applications, and Computerized Patient administration systems
  • Formal Training in Management and or
    leadership skills and ability to maintain a well-motivated team
  • Highly analytical, with good
    communication and interpersonal skills
