empowered and self-reliant to contribute significantly to the needs of their
families and communities. Works in partnership with a number of donors,
(institutional and corporate agencies) including; Norwegian Agency for
Development Cooperation (NORAD), Austrian Development Agency (ADA), Grieg
Foundation, ERIKS Development Partner, USAID/Bantwana World Education, AVIS Foundation,
Brand Charity, USAID/Uganda Private Health Support Program (UPHSP), Terre des
Hommes (TDH), Stanbic Bank Uganda, DHL – Go Teach, Madhvani Group of Companies.

Job Summary:  The Grants Accountant supports the Head of
Finance to manage grants provided to SOS Children’s Village Uganda. S/he is
responsible for providing support during the preparation of contracts/grants
and assists in financial management and monitoring of sub-recipient projects.
S/he will also support the grants team in providing financial management
support to contractors /grantees. S/he performs a full range of financial and
management accounting, planning and monitoring functions which are critical to
the smooth running of SOS Uganda contracts/grants program. S/he also manages
the smooth flow of communication between the contractors/grantees on financial
matters. This position is based at the Kampala SOS Uganda National Office with
frequent travels to the field.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Participate in the development of financial systems and tools for
    management of grants/contracts and annual work plan.
  • Provide support during the selection and negotiation process of
    grants/contracts and in developing proposals and budgets for the grants.
  • Work collaboratively with the other grants management team members
    in overseeing sub-grant functions and coordinate preparation of grant
    agreements, monitoring of grant periods and close out of the sub-grant
    awards.
  • Participate in the Grants quarterly Reviews.
  • Provide all the necessary financial information including approved
    budgets, monthly and quarterly financial statements for good and effective
    financial management of grants.
  • Prepare and submit weekly and monthly reports on strategic plan
    implementation, budget status, facility requirements and other project
    requirements to initiate timely decision making.
  • Update financial data in databases and ensure that physical
    accounting documents and other financial information is accurate, properly
    documented and stored in a manner which facilitates easy retrieval.
  • Supervise all the Grants Assistants and directly manage the projects
    with no Grants Assistants.
  • Provide support in tracking and reporting of financial performance
    of all grants i.e Manage all donor monthly and quarterly reports ensuring
    that they are ready for review by the Head of Finance by 10th of the
    following month and submitted to all stakeholders by the 15th of the
    following month.
  • Take a lead role in facilitating external audits, internal audits
    and implementation of action plans on all donor related projects.
  • Prepare regular and adhoc reports of all Contracts/Grants
    transactions.
  • Monitor the Key Implementing Partners (KIPs) by visiting their field
    activities, as necessary, to assess performance and identify areas of
    weakness that require action on the part of the KIP or that require
    external technical assistance and follow up to  ensure appropriate action is taken in
    liaison with Programme/Project team and the location level.
  • Ensure that KIPs and Implementing staff (staff) comply with SOS and
    Donor reporting guidelines.
  • Implement policies and procedures around the administration and
    monitoring of grants, and procedures designed to comply with donor
    regulations.
  • Ensure that funds advances/payments to KIPs and staff are prepared,
    reviewed         and approved in a
    timely manner in order to facilitate smooth flow of funds to them.
  • Draft financial communications to Partners, Donors, staff and KIPs.
  • Monitor data captured into the system and thereafter generate
    monthly and quarterly reports to be shared with the respective
    stakeholders and Managers in time.
  • Support the review of reports, accountabilities and queries
    submitted by the KIPS, Partners, Donors and staff.
  • Work closely with the members of the grants management team to put
    in place a consistent- hard copy / electronic filing structure and system
    for financial information and contracts related to grants.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant for the SOS Children’s Villages Grants Accountant vacancy
    must hold a University degree in accounting, business administration,
    commerce with Professional Qualification up at least ACCA, CPA Level 
  • Five years of experience preferably in Grants Management.
  • Good communication and report writing skills
  • Analytical and research skills
  • IT Skills and familiarity with any accounting computer software
  • Experience with accounting voucher reviews
  • Willingness to work as a team member, taking on additional tasks as
    needed to ensure the overall success of the project
  • High level of attention to detail, ability to multi-task and work
    well under pressure
  • Strong analytical and inter-personal skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and in a culturally sensitive
    environment.
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a
    team
  • Deadline-oriented
