Lung Institute (MLI) is a center of excellence for lung health research at the
Makerere University College of Health Sciences. Our mission is to conduct high
quality lung health research that integrates disease prevention, clinical care
and training in Sub-Saharan Africa. MLI in collaboration with Servicio
Madrileño de Salud/Fundación para la Investigación Biomédica Hospital
Universitario 12 de Octubre and EDCTP are conducting a clinical trial for
empirical treatment of cytomegalovirus and tuberculosis among HIV positive infants.

Job Summary: The
Pharmacy Technician will be responsible for handling, preparation, dispensing,
drug accountability and final disposal of study products.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Handling, preparation, drug accountability and final disposal of
    study products for the clinical trial(s).
  • Securely store study products, equipment and other ancillary
    supplies at correct storage conditions based on the requirements of the
    manufacturer and study protocol
  • Requesting and receiving of study products through customs
  • Develop procedures for ordering, receipt, storage, preparing,
    dispensing, disposing, accountability, inventory and quarantine of study
    products
  • Maintain the Pharmacy Site File and study logs
  • Create study labels for the EMPIRICAL investigational products
  • Maintain temperature logs for the clinical trial
  • Report protocol deviations to the Principal Investigator and sponsor
    pharmacist
  • Perform routine physical inventory counts and communicate with
    sponsor Pharmacist
  • Dispense study medication to the patient according to information on
    the prescription
  • Inform patients on the correct use of study medication (when they
    should take the medication and the dose)
  • Check that the patient is compliant in taking the medication
    according to the trial protocol
  • Check and log returned medication
  • Check numbers and expiry dates of any medication returned. Log
    details of the returned medication onto the EMPIRICAL study drugs returned
    log
  • Send used/unused study medication for destruction
  • Request authorization to destroy medication from sponsor Pharmacist
    and Principal investigator
  • Send any relevant destruction formal certification to sponsor
    Pharmacist as requested
  • Support & participate in MLI pharmacy related activities

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant must hold a Diploma in Pharmacy at a recognized
    institution in Uganda (or abroad)
  • Registration with the Allied Health Professionals body
  • Two years of post qualification experience. Experience working in a
    research organization is an added advantage
  • Experience in the usage of computers / MS Office Packages (MS Word,
    Excel, etc.)
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Effective Communication; ability to write in a clear and concise
    manner and to communicate orally
  • Flexible and reliable with demonstrated ability to adapt to
    different clinical/research environments
  • Must be diligent, honest and able to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work well in a team
  • Willing to learn new skills to obtain high-quality research data
