The AfriChild Centre
(AfriChild) is a multidisciplinary research Centre that works to improve
child-focused policy and practice through scientific research, analysis and
knowledge development in collaboration with the public and private sectors,
academia and civil society.

Job Summary:  The Executive Director provides vision,
leadership, management and effective high-level national and international
representation for AfriChild.  The
Executive Director is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the
AfriChild Strategic Plan, will work closely with the AfriChild Board and manage
a highly effective team.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

Organisational
Representation

  • Implement and further develop AfriChild’s vision, mission, goals,
    Values and principles in line with agreed AfriChild strategies and
    organisational priorities
  • Represent AfriChild in a variety of forums and maintain external relationships
    within a diverse range of stakeholders in the sector including government,
    key national and international NGOs, donors, academic, social movements,
    CBO’s, media and other relevant institutions globally
  • Actively contribute to AfriChild’s development as a member of an
    international network of research institutions on issues pertaining to
    children.
  • Provide inputs to AfriChild’s national and international initiatives
    as and when required, including participation on task forces, training
    courses and conferences.

Institutional
Governance

  • Work with the AfriChild Board in ensuring the organisation is
    aligned with good practices of governance and AfriChild governance
    policies/ frameworks.
  • Develop and manage professional/sound relationships with Board Chair/Board
    members.
  • Collaborate with the AfriChild Board to identify and manage risk and
    inform the Board of any development that may have organizational policy
    implications.
  • Provide Secretarial services to the AfriChild Board.
  • Supervise the implementation of the decisions and/ resolutions of
    the AfriChild Board.
  • Prepare and present activity, performance and financial reports
    including budgets and work plans to the AfriChild Board.
  • Keep custody of AfriChild’s governance documents, files and other
    organs of the Centre.

Fundraising

  • Develop a funding strategy and plan to mobilise and diversify
    AfriChild’s resource base to support the implementation of the AfriChild
    Strategic Plan.
  • Build capacity of staff to mobilize and access research grants.
  • Establish and develop working relationships with key donors
    worldwide.
  • Actively develop local and international funding sources appropriate
    to AfriChild’s resource needs.
  • Ensure a regular flow of information is available to AfriChild’s
    funding function and to donors and official funders as required by the
    various funding mechanisms.
  • Position AfriChild as a lead agency in management of donor funds
    relating to Children–focused research initiatives in line with the
    AfriChild strategic plan.

Communications and
Campaign

  • Lead the development of a communication strategy that will deepen
    the impact of AfriChild’s work, identify key priorities, channels,
    audiences and messages to establish an appropriate public image for the
    Centre in line with AfriChild values and culture
  • Develop and manage a sound relationship with all sections of the
    media and ensure that any published material accurately reflects the views
    of AfriChild.
  • Encourage the development of appropriate research to improve the
    quality of work and to influence change in policy to foster the Centre’s
    goals and objectives.
  • Conduct promotions to create connections between practitioners and
    various policy makers and stakeholders to increase the public awareness
    of, and support for issues pertaining to children.

HR Management

  • Maintain effective and appropriate staff recruitment, induction,
    appraisal, and remuneration and development policies and practices at all
    levels to ensure the optimum utilisation and development of AfriChild’s
    human resources.
  • Appoint, develop and manage all senior staff. Ensure a high calibre
    of staff is recruited while promoting a gender balance in the
    organisation, and that optimum investments are made in their development.
  • Develop a qualified and valued AfriChild team, based on equality and
    diversity, and provide this team with an empowering and enabling
    environment conducive to quality programming by fostering innovation,
    ongoing learning and team work.
  • Actively promote staff exchange, secondment and development schemes,
    where these contribute to the meeting of AfriChild’s programme objectives
    and priorities.

Strategy
Development and Implementation

  • Lead and account for the delivery of AfriChild’s strategic plan and
    oversee the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the strategy.
  • Articulate a research agenda for the Centre and follow through its
    implementation.
  • Lead and direct the work of AfriChild in accordance with sound
    management practices and AfriChild’s organizational policies and
    accountability systems.
  • Ensure all programme activities are sensitive to and responsive to
    changes in the legal, political, social, and economic environments.
  • Develop and maintain appropriate contingency plans for all kinds of
    emergencies that may affect AfriChild’s work or its researchers’ work.
  • Develop AfriChild’s capacity to document, disseminate and learn from
    Children’s Rights -related work and ensure all reporting meets the highest
    standard.

Operations &
Finance

  • Ensure mutual accountability between AfriChild and related
    stakeholders with the establishment of all organisational processes,
    systems and policy to ensure the effectiveness of the Centre.
  • Ensure the financial integrity and accountability of AfriChild in
    accordance with the Centre’s Financial Management framework
  • Authorization payments/sign Cheques and Web banking
  • Manage the financial resources allocated to or raised by the Centre
    in compliance with approved policies/ frameworks as well as national law
    and donors’ regulations.
  • Lead the preparation of the Centre’s budget and financial plan to
    ensure that that the control of expenditure and the disbursement of
    resources in accordance with the established procedures.
  • Provide progress and financial reports as required by the
    government, the Board, AfriChild’s accountability procedures and as
    required by other donor organisations.
  • Maintain an efficient internal control framework to ensure that
    AfriChild has a well-balanced, well documented and cost effective
    programme.

Partnership
management, coordination and development

  • Identify, develop and manage co-operative relationships established
    with various institutions and partners in and outside the country and
    ensure that these joint initiatives conform to programme objectives and
    strengthen the profile of AfriChild.
  • Lead the development and implementation of AfriChild – specific
    guidelines for the management of partnerships in line with the AfriChild
    Strategic Plan and other relevant organizational policies.
  • Build relations for growth between international academic
    institutions and the Centre and link the Centre to global networks for
    learning and sharing.

Others

  • Act as a focal person to identify and manage all risks/ crisis
    related to AfriChild’s operations

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Law,
    Business, Finance, Development Studies or Management from a recognized
    institution.
  • Five years in a senior management position of development work with
    an interface with INGOs as well as child-focused program.
  • Demonstrated senior management expertise.
  • Proven experience on successful fundraising programmes with emphasis
    on regular giving and corporate fundraising.
  • Proven experience in managing complex financial control and
    management systems with the budget size of 1 million USD
  • Demonstrated expertise in strategic and long term planning and the
    ability to ensure that operational plans and activities meet targets and
    appropriately reflect longer term perspectives. 
  • Proven experience of working and negotiating with donors at all
    levels.
