Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) is to strengthen health systems in Africa,
with a strong emphasis on infectious diseases through research and capacity
development. IDI has five operational areas through which it works to achieve
its mission: Prevention, Care and Treatment; Training, Research, Laboratory
services (including the CAP-certified IDI Core Lab) and Outreach.
About USAID Project:
The University
Research Co., LLC (URC), a US-based public health organization working in
Uganda since 2005, is implementing the five- year USAID funded project (The
Defeat TB project). The purpose of this project is to support the government of
Uganda’s TB control program to increase TB case detection and improve treatment
outcomes through health system strengthening, with the aim of ending the TB
epidemic in Uganda. The Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) has partnered with
the University Research Co. LLC (URC) on this project to provide technical support
for Operations Research. USAID/ Defeat TB project together with IDI plan to
carry out analyses of routinely collected data in order to evaluate the effect
of project interventions on TB case detection and treatment outcomes.
Job Summary: The Research Fellow will abstract, clean and
contribute to the analysis and write up of routinely collected data at health
facilities supported by the USAID Defeat TB project in Kampala, Wakiso, Mukono
and in regional referral hospitals across the country in accordance with the
approved protocol. Each successful participant will be expected to start their
fellowship in October 2019. By the end of the six months’ fellowship, each
research fellow is expected to produce at least one high quality abstract and
at one draft manuscript by the end of their fellowship..
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participate in a two-day protocol training workshop.
- Engage with management at the respective regional referral hospitals
and ward in charges through an entry meeting to ensure that seamless data
collection processes are carried out - Abstract data using approved data abstraction tools.
- Perform data cleaning and first level data analyses.
- Work with project statistician to complete data analysis for their
allocated research question - Complete and submit an abstract to a national or international
conference - Complete Draft 1 of the manuscript by the end of their fellowship
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant should preferably hold a Basic degree in health
sciences including medical or allied sciences e.g. medicine, nursing, or
laboratory science. - Masters’ degree research related discipline e.g. public health,
epidemiology and health services research. - Experience collecting qualitative data and quantitative data
- Recent training in Good Clinical Practice
- Previous experience with scientific writing demonstrated by having
submitted an abstract to a national or international conference. - Ability to work with data analysis software e.g. SPSS or STATA
