About UNHCR Project:

HIJRA with funding
from the UNHCR in Uganda is implementing a multi-sectoral Program for refugees
in Oruchinga settlement (Isingiro district), Nakivale settlement (Isingiro
district), Nyakabande Transit Center (Kisoro district) and Kyangwali Settlement
(Hoima District).

Job Summary:  The Psychosocial Officer is responsible for
leading the field PSS team in implementing psychosocial interventions including
individual and group counselling sessions, initiatives to strengthen community
based psychosocial support, and field level coordination for MHPSS. The
position holder will work closely with the SGBV, child protection, legal and
community based protection teams receiving referrals and ensuring confidential
PSS case management and follow up.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Plan and implement PSS interventions for refugees and members of the
    host community identified with need.
  • Ensure adherence to the IASC MHPSS guidelines as well as the HIJRA
    and UNHCR protection guidelines.
  • Supervise and provide technical guidance to PSS assistants.
  • Build the capacity of the PSS team to foe effective service
    delivery.
  • Prepare sector reports on a weekly, monthly and quarterly basis.
  • Provide timely professional and confidential counselling services to
    survivors of GBV both new and old cases, children at risks, persons with
    specific needs and others identified as in need.
  • Lead sectoral documentation to capture success stories, best
    practices for further advocacy and program development.
  • Lead community awareness creation through outreaches to the communities
    with community structures and partners on PSS.
  • Assist in development and provision of psychosocial services to
    HIJRA office based on participatory community assessment.
  • Build, maintain and strengthen networks with community leadership
    and relevant partner focal points for MHPSS.
  • Work closely with HIJRA protection officers to coordinate PSS within
    the organization.
  • Review cases for referral to the health partner for advanced
    psychiatric assessment and treatment.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Project Manager.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The ideal candidate for the HIJRA Psychosocial Officer job
    opportunity must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, counselling or
    other related field.
  • At least two years of relevant professional experience
  • Strong experience working with vulnerable people including survivors
    of GBV and child abuse.
  • Experience in child counselling
  • Familiarity with guidelines on Mental Health and Psychosocial
    Support in emergency settings.
  • Strong organizational and supervisory skills with excellent
    reporting & writing skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • An excellent command of verbal and written English.
  • Computer literacy i.e. proficiency in MS. Office, PowerPoint, Email)
  • Have a strong passion for PSS with compassion for serving persons in
    need and able to ensure a high level of confidentiality.
