services (including the CAP-certified IDI Core Lab) and Outreach.
About Project:
IDI has received
funding from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) to conduct
research on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in Malawi and Uganda. The goal of
this research project is to take an interdisciplinary approach to determine the
drivers of transmission of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing
Escherichia coli and ESBL Klebsiella pneumoniae in Kampala and Hoima districts.
To model the drivers of AMR-transmission, the project will undertake detailed,
longitudinal microbiological surveillance of humans, animals and the
environment to understand the dynamics of ESBL-E. coli and ESBL-K. pneumoniae
and their ecological niche. The laboratory-based work for the project involves
screening of human (blood and faecal), animal (faecal) and environmental
specimens for the target organisms using molecular and phenotypic methods.
Job Summary: The One Environmental Health Officer will work
closely with the Veterinary Officer (VO) as a team to coordinate project
activities that are based within Hoima and Kampala field surveillance areas.
The EHO’s work will be supported by field assistants based in Hoima and
Kampala.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist the overall Study coordinator/Site Manager with
implementation of study protocols, planning and problem-solving at the
community surveillance sites in Hoima and Kampala - Coordinate all field protocol implementation with support from field
assistants, including mobilization of recruited participants, data
collection, sample collection and transport, study log maintenance, data
management, participant follow-up, requisition for supplies and
accountability for all aspects related to human, animal and water,
sanitation and hygiene (WASH) surveillance - Establish, maintain and document all daily field activities
according to protocol and standard operating procedures - Support all WASH activities of the study including but not limited
to community transect walks, household observations, key informant
interviews, focus group discussions, and questionnaire administration - Liaise with the regional laboratory focal person to ensure the
efficient collection and transportation of samples (human, animal, and
environment) from the field to reference laboratories and efficient
transmission of results back to study participants (when relevant) and
external collaborators - Certify that all submission of all fieldwork progress, activity and
performance reports to the Study/Site Coordinator - Work in accordance with established working procedures and protocols
of the organization - Participate in the development and control of budgets with the
Study/ Site Coordinator in accordance with financial guidelines
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Bachelors of Environmental Health Science
from a recognized university - Post graduate training will be added advantage
- Previous experience in conducting research with field data
collection - Ability to work in a team environment
- Excellent organization and communication skills
- Knowledge of the local languages (English, Runyoro-Kitara, Luganda)
will be an added advantage
