Job Summary:  The Driver Mechanic will drive Cordaid
vehicles safely in accordance with Cordaid requirements and with supervisor’s
instructions to transport cargo and personnel, Trainees, and guests to appointments
in Kampala and, as may be needed, throughout the countryside, where Cordaid
operates within Uganda. The incumbent will also have assigned responsibility in
the oversight of periodic maintenance and repairs of Cordaid vehicles.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Driving: The incumbent will operate official Cordaid vehicles to
    transport staff and cargo.
  • Maintenance and Repair: The Driver will ensure that vehicles are
    maintained and repaired from service providers on time. He will also
    maintain the vehicles clean as required.
  • Record keeping: The Driver will maintain vehicle logs that record
    each trip taken, odometer readings and time of departure and arrival for
    each trip. Each time that fuel is put in the vehicle, the driver will
    document on the mileage sheet the amount, odometer reading, and date
    obtained. Any maintenance must also be recorded.
  • Security: Keep the supervisor abreast of any security situations or
    hazards and report timely to the Procurement and Logistics Manager any
    Security incidents or accidents that require security and safety measures.
    Standard procedures need to be followed when an accident occurs
  • The Driver will also deliver and pick-up messages and parcels. He
    will make purchases as may be requested.
  • The Driver will load and offload heavy items into/from vehicles, as
    well as help move furniture and equipment from one part of the office and
    residences to another.
  • The driver will perform administrative clerical work whenever
    required by the supervisor and the team at Kampala office.
  • Ensure that the vehicle is equipped with the required tools and
    equipment such as the fire extinguisher, wheel change kit, spare wheel and
    the first aid kit.
  • Submit the inspection report on a weekly basis and/or after every
    handover of the vehicles to another party, and report any maintenance
    problems that may require attention
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Logistics Manager.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The ideal candidate for the Cordaid Driver vacancy should have a minimum
    of O level certificate. Possession of a Diploma in logistics will be an
    added advantage.
  • Excellent knowledge on vehicles repair and maintenance are highly
    desired. A minimum of three years of professional chauffeur experience and
    a valid local driver’s license for following types of vehicles is highly
    preferred. Classes: B (motor cars), CM (medium commercial), DL (light
    omnibus).
  • Knowledge and ability: Must be familiar with local traffic laws and
    area traffic patterns is required; knowledge and prior work experience
    with electronic record keeping (computer usage) is also highly desired.
  • Duties require the ability to deal with officials and guests at the
    front desk and occasionally VIPs in a relaxed but competent and
    professional manner.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of staff,
    Implementing partners, business people, property owners.
  • Proven exposure and experience of cross-cultural communication
    skills is highly desired.
  • Legally able to work in Uganda.
  • Language Proficiency: Ability to speak, read, and write in English
    fluently.
