About UNHCR:
The Office of the
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14,
1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. UNHCR’s mandate under the Statute
of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is to lead
and co-ordinate action for international protection to refugees; seek permanent
solutions for the problems of refugees and safeguard refugee rights and
well-being. UNHCR has an additional mandate concerning issues of statelessness,
as it is given a designated role under Article 11 of the 1961 Convention on the
Reduction of Statelessness.
Job Summary: The
Social Media Associate will bridge existing gaps and will produce, maintain and
promote external content and perform as a lead for social media initiatives.
This will help maintain and further enhance the current momentum of the Uganda
operation including the implementation of the Comprehensive Refugee Response
Framework (CRRF) on social media platforms, drive additional footfall to the
UNHCR global and Africa website, expand outreach, awareness and online advocacy
campaigns in the region and beyond, in addition to achieving wider engagement
with UNHCR partners. The incumbent will also help strengthen coordination and
editorial planning across the Unit, support advocacy, awareness-raising and
digital fundraising efforts as well as strengthening analytics to inform the
social media strategies and work-plans.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Provide support to the Global digital platforms to accelerate the
    creation and update of content from Uganda
  • Process urgent news pieces, social media content, video scripts and
    other types of documents for immediate publishing to achieve wider
    engagement with UNHCR partners and supporters.
  • Regularly monitor public conversations and screen the audience
    sentiment on social media platforms in an effort to carry out a community
    management plan to raise awareness about UNHCR work and avert potentially
    damaging comments about the organization
  • Liaise with relevant web and social media teams across Africa and
    HQ, including video and photo units, for the latest content
  • Manage the official social media accounts (create/post/monitor
    content) in collaboration with Communication colleagues in Uganda,
    regional and at HQs
  • Coordinate and facilitate content production among members of the
    Global Website Unit to avoid loss of data and prevent any outdated
    publishing
  • Carry out regular media monitoring of press coverage related to the
    Uganda operation on social platforms
  • Ensure that the office is kept informed of local developments which
    may have a political or operational impact on the office activities
  • Actively participate in events planning and media coverage
  • Serve as a functional back-up for the PI/Communications team.
  • Perform any other related tasks as appropriate.
Key Performance Indicators: 
  • Support is provided to UNHCR Country Office Kampala in terms of
    creating of content that includes production of videos, quality
    photography, graphic designing, story writing; support communication
    initiatives and enhance visibility of UNHCR Uganda operation on social
    media platforms.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The ideal candidate for the United Nations UNHCR Social Media
    Associate job vacancy should have completed High School with
    post-secondary training in Social Science, Journalism, Communication,
    Translation, Humanitarian or related fields
  • At least six years of previous relevant job experience
  • Excellent computer skills and knowledge of MS Office applications
  • Fluency in English and local language/languages
  • Desirable: Knowledge
    in the field of graphics and web design is an asset.
