Job Summary: The Knowledge Management and Communications
Officer will support the development and dissemination of case studies, best
practices, activity reports, newsletters, photo shoots, videos portraying
WaterAid and the respective partners work in the achievement of the
organization’s objectives. You are part of the team responsible for enhancing
the scale and quality of WaterAid’s Programme and funding portfolio. This role
is a crucial function in Media, Advocacy, Public Communication, Documentation
and Dissemination of WaterAid Uganda (WAU) best practices, key learnings and
development to enhance visibility, amongst donors, development partners and to
the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) partners (both government and civil
society organizations) thereby facilitating internal fundraising initiatives.
Officer will support the development and dissemination of case studies, best
practices, activity reports, newsletters, photo shoots, videos portraying
WaterAid and the respective partners work in the achievement of the
organization’s objectives. You are part of the team responsible for enhancing
the scale and quality of WaterAid’s Programme and funding portfolio. This role
is a crucial function in Media, Advocacy, Public Communication, Documentation
and Dissemination of WaterAid Uganda (WAU) best practices, key learnings and
development to enhance visibility, amongst donors, development partners and to
the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) partners (both government and civil
society organizations) thereby facilitating internal fundraising initiatives.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support the design and development of strategies for discrete areas
of communications, e.g. Social Behaviour Change (SBCC), dissemination plan
for a publication or a media engagement plan, scene setters for key WAU
events, identify key messages, objectives, target audiences etc. - Support implementation of Voices for Accountability programme
projects guided by a Human Rights Based Approach that contribute to the
programme goals as well as the strategic objectives of WAU. - Lead collection and documentation from project areas for use as
evidence for fundraising and policy advocacy at district, national and international
levels. - Promote understanding and regular update of the WASH sector and
other development issues within WAU and its partners. Develop regular
newsletters for all WAU and sector related activities, manage all updates
both locally and internationally. This will also involve the management of
the WAU page on WaterAid website and social media pages. - Work as the focal point of contact of WAU within the media
fraternity by developing and maintaining positive and proactive
relationships in order to support the work of WaterAid and its partners. - On a daily basis, monitor major Ugandan and international news media
in order to stay abreast of local and global events directly relevant and
tangential to WAU’s work and provide regular media reports, including analysis
to internal teams to enhance decision making processes. - Develop ideas, opportunities, and draft feature articles,
interviews, presentations, op- eds, and other communications pieces — in
conjunction and collaboration with the Voices for Accountability Programme
Advisor — to promote awareness of the programmatic and advocacy work of
WAU. - Map, update, and maintain media database
- Safeguard that all media messages and activities are in line with
WaterAid’s media and communication policies and safeguard style/identity
and the quality of the content - Organize and support communication strategies, messages and
materials for project trainings, conferences, workshops, and meetings - Lead the identification, development and dissemination of success
stories and material for monthly newsletter - Develop and manage innovative mechanisms and tools to capture and
share WAU learnings, project outcomes and previous project impacts. - Lead and monitor the design and production of WAU publications and
materials such as laying out researches findings, best practices,
brochures, newsletters, annual reports etc and ensure that they adhere to
WA’s corporate identity guidelines. - Create relevant social networking platforms to promote WAU’s work.
Establish a brand presence on social networks through Blogs, Face Book,
Yammer, Twitter and other means as appropriate and continually widen
supporter base. - Attend sector key advocacy and fundraising events to gather basic
information and short interviews, including acting as the interviewer on
short video clips to accompany all images / footage. - Collaborate with partners and related programme staff in the
production and dissemination of at least three (3) learning documents each
year, detailing best practice/policy lessons etc arising from WAU’s work. - Ensure that annual planning takes place; planners and detailed
calendars developed and communication monitored and synchronized with
advocacy and fundraising, - Manage the webpage of Uganda country program; as Country Content
Officer ensure regular posting of information; Ensure page is up to date,
accurate, compelling according to the International webpage of WaterAid. - Lead WAU brand management
- Carrying out participative planning activities in accordance with
the partnership contract plan. Undertake field visits to
document/photo-document success stories of partners. - Meeting regularly with individual partners in accordance with the
above mentioned plan for partnership activity progress e.g documenting
WASH untold stories. - Facilitating and supporting the involvement of partners in public
communication at international meetings / sector meetings or developmental
activities related to WASH.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication or
Journalism. - Five years of experience in Communications, Documentation for
Development, Media, Advocacy related work in an international
organisation. - Excellent skills in documentation, presentation, public speaking and
information management - Good interpersonal and leadership skills with commitment to
WaterAid’s values and working styles. - Good networking, facilitation and co-ordination skills
- Good events management skills
- Commitment to addressing issues of Equity & Inclusion and pro
poor approaches. - Good understanding of communications techniques application in Human
Based Right Approach to WASH development programmes. - Extensive knowledge of advocacy campaigns and documentation in areas
of development and fundraising works. - Good understanding of WASH sector, the National public expenditure,
National Development Plan/PEAP, Sector-wide approaches, development
financing and functioning of government structures like decentralisation. - Excellent writing and editing skills coupled with good interpersonal
relations. - Proven experience in community mobilisation and public speaking.
- Experience of working with partners.
- Excellent Microsoft computer knowledge of packages like MS Word and
excel and Adobe design packages like InDesign, Photoshop, Word press,
Illustrator is added advantage
