in West Nile, Acholi, Karamoja and South-Western Uganda. ADRA wishes to recruit
a highly qualified, experienced and energetic Ugandan national, to occupy the
vacant position of Internal Auditor/Controller.
About CEMS:
Comprehensive
Emergency Medical Support (CEMS) – Field Emergency and Inpatient Unit +
Comprehensive Primary and Secondary Health Clinic. The CEMS Project is
contributing to run a static emergency medical unit 24/7 in Kyaka II Refugee
Settlement that is serving the refugee community mainly from DRC, as well the
host community.
Job Summary:   The ED Nurse will deliver care to patients
utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention,
implementation, and evaluation of the patient. The ED Nurses will collaborate
with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care delivery
and achievement of desired patient outcomes and effectively interact with the
patient and significant others while maintaining the standard of professional
nursing. In an emergency situation, nurses often treat patients who have
life-threatening conditions. Their primary job functions are to resuscitate or
stabilize patients and refer them to the appropriate medical departments. A
nurse works as part of a team with physicians, other nurses and healthcare
professionals to provide care, monitor health conditions, plan long-term care
needs, administer medicine, use medical equipment, perform minor medical
operations, and advise patients and their families on illness, care and
continued care after a hospital stay. For the CEMS the ED Nurse needs to be
comfortable with rapid assessments of each patient, to prioritize care, and
work to stabilize the patient, to treat underlying conditions, and to discharge
the patient once they are stabilized.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Collect current symptoms, as well as a detailed patient history and
    then consults and coordinate with healthcare team members to assess, plan,
    implement and evaluate patient care plans;
  • Performing triage, while considering both physical and psychosocial
    elements;
  • Managing basic life support needs and stabilizing patients until the
    attending physician is available, based upon nursing standards and
    protocols;
  • Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring
    equipment shows adverse symptomatology;
  • Records patients’ current vital signs;
  • Works directly under physicians, assisting them during exams,
    diagnostic testing and treatments;
  • Works side by side with other health professionals and with international
    medical volunteers as a team;
  • Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, through an IV) and
    records prescribed medications. Reports adverse reactions to medications
    or treatments; provides IV therapy;
  • Cleans and bandages wounds and provides basic, bedside care;
  • Maintains proper supplies and appropriate medical equipment to care
    for patients;
  • Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control
    policies and protocols, medication administration and storage procedures,
    and controlled substance regulations;
  • Reports any suspected abuse to management;
  • Maintains continuity among nursing teams by documenting and
    communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs;
  • Initiates patient education plan, as prescribed by the physician.
    Teaches patients and significant others how to manage their
    illness/injury, by explaining: post-treatment home care needs,
    diet/nutrition/exercise programs, self-administration of medication and
    rehabilitation, as well as provides referrals to other healthcare
    professionals for follow-up treatment;
  • Displays professionalism while completing multiple urgent tasks in a
    timely manner;
  • Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely,
    in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate
    forms;
  • Liaise arrangements when a patient needs a referral or for those who
    come with a referral from a different health organization, directing them
    to the right department;
  • Ensure that the Emergency Department is appropriately stocked;
  • Supervises nurse assistants and cleaners;
  • Supervises nursing students;
  • Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with
    procedures, rules, and regulations;
  • Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance
    requirements maintaining;
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending
    educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing
    personal networks, etc;
  • Work in another area of the CEMS differently than ED, when asked.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The ideal candidate for the ADRA Uganda ED Nurse job placement
    should hold a Degree in Nursing
  • At least three years of experience
  • Ability to work in a rotating shift of 8 hours
  • Flexibility to work 16 hours shift when needed
  • Availability to work 24 hours shifts;
  • Fluent in English
  • Swahili and French
  • Ability to communicate and interact well with people from different
    educational, linguistic, cultural and religious backgrounds
  • Proficiency in handling basic computer programs used in hospital
    management and basic computer skills in Word and Excel.
