founded in 1897 in Kampala, and is the oldest hospital in Uganda. It currently
serves as an urban community hospital that provides modern medical care. Mengo
Hospital provides comprehensive care including radiology, obstetrics,
dentistry, orthopedics, and surgery. Additionally, Mengo Hospital provides critical
training and education to health professionals through its various programs in
midwifery and nursing, health sciences, and laboratory technology. Mengo
Hospital also has a dedicated research and development team that works to find
new solutions to health issues in Uganda.

Job Summary: The Laboratory Technologist will conduct laboratory
investigations for the purpose of disease diagnosis, treatment, control,
prevention and research.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Develop and ensure Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for different
    lab tests are in place, reviewed and updated
  • Ensure that test results are correctly and legibly entered on the
    patient report forms and laboratory records.
  • Participates in QC/QI for area of specialty and Lab indicators.
  • Ensure that specimens are checked as to their condition,
    acceptability and appropriateness to the test and exceptions are noted.
  • Keeps an adequate supply.
  • Work pending is organized and appropriately left for follow up.
  • All critical values are reported promptly to the physician and Ward
    Managers/ nurse.
  • Ensure that all routine Laboratory tests results are completed and
    delivered to the wards.
  • Compile and submit daily and monthly reports to the Lab Manager.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The applicant should hold a Bachelors’ Degree in Medical Laboratory
    Technology from a recognized Institution and/or with equivalent
    education/work experience in either Hematology & Immunohematology,
    Clinical Chemistry and Microbiology.
  • A diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized
    institution is an added advantage.
  • Fully licensed by the Uganda Allied Health Professional Council
    (UAHPC).
  • A training in Laboratory Quality Management System, Biosafety and
    QC/QI will be an added advantage.
  • A training in logistic management may be desirable.
  • A minimum of three to five years of work experience in a Laboratory
    work at the same level.
  • Experience in an appropriate healthcare environment is desirable.
  • Some theoretical and practical knowledge in all disciplines of pathology
    relevant to its multi-disciplinary nature.
  • Events Planning and management skills
  • Strong organization skills
  • Advocacy and lobbying skills
