with increasing emphasis on assistance to the least developed countries.
About the UN Graduate Volunteer Programme:
To enhance young
graduates’ employability and bridge their transition to work, the United
Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Uganda and UN Volunteer (UNV) Programme
in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development
(MGLSD) on behalf of the Government of Uganda, developed a Project, “Uganda
Graduate Volunteer Scheme”. The project aims to contribute to efforts of
addressing persistent employment challenges faced by Ugandan young graduates.
The project will specifically aim to provide young graduates leaving
institutions of higher learning on an annual basis with access to work spaces
to gain employability skills. This is in line with national strategy to
increase availability and quality of gainful employment and enhance human
capital development in the country.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
Partnership
development and support:
  • Coordinate partnership building activities in Western region of
    Uganda
  • Support the partnership specialist to mobilize more partners in the
    regions to join the project to increased resource mobilization and project
    impact
  • Build and maintain effective relationships with local and regional
    level partners
Volunteer Placement
Coordination:
  • Coordinate volunteers on duty capacity building and post assignment
    support and address all issues and inquiries from both volunteers and host
    institutions
  • Plan and lead site visits to host institution to review the progress
    of each volunteer hosted, including discussion and resolution of any
    challenges
  • Plan and lead meeting/training at the end of the placement cycle
    with volunteers and host employers, including career fairs
  • Support coordination of dissemination events to share programme
    learning
  • Oversee and offer guidance to the coordination of alumni network
    initiatives
  • Design and oversee ongoing career guidance and job placement support
    for volunteers and alumni.
  • Support to implementing partners including Volunteer Host
    Institutions in the coordination of activities to ensure their efficient
    and effective contribution to project outcomes
  • Mobilize and maintain an updated database of graduate volunteers
    hosting institutions working/interested in working with project in the
    region
  • Manage a database of volunteers in the region and offer guidance to
    the recruitment process
Monitoring and reporting:
  • Provide guidance to volunteers on the reporting templates, review
    volunteer monthly reports and offer feedback and guidance as required
  • Preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual reports and as when
    required progress reports detailing progress against the output targets
  • Closely monitor overall the project progress, impact and risks and
    inform the project board of any changes within the project environment
    which would affect foreseen and agreed upon expected outcomes;
  • Sharing information regularly on the progress of project
    implementation, and any relevant issues as may be necessary;
Knowledge building
and sharing:
  • Actively participate in the development and preparation of annual
    workplans, quarterly reports and other reports
  • Promote knowledge sharing through the organization’s processes,
    systems and departments/units by helping develop and strengthen links
    between them to facilitate exchange of information
  • Identifying and codifying good practices locally and regionally for
    consideration;
  • Synthesis of lessons learnt and document best practices;
  • Proactively contribute to knowledge networks and communities of
    practice.
Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:
  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of
    volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take
    active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark IVD);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of
    volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are
    undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them
    for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or
    encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV
    Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

  • A final statement of achievements towards volunteerism for
    development during the assignment, such as reporting on the number of
    volunteers mobilized, activities participated in and capacities developed.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The ideal candidate for the United Nations UN Volunteers Graduate
    Volunteer Scheme Coordinator, Western Region career opportunity should a
    University Degree in development studies, Community Development, business
    administration, management, economics, or related field.
  • Post Graduate Diploma or Certification in Project Management an
    advantage
  • At least three (3) years of professional experience involving
    programme/project development and management;
  • Experience in Knowledge Management and coordination with a diversity
    of stakeholders;
  • Experience in field level coordination of similar initiatives an
    advantage
