research services, from the design of large scale research projects through to

clients. Laterite currently operates in Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Ethiopia, India
and the Netherlands. Laterite brings together more than 40 full time staff. In
the last few years, we have successfully completed over 100 research projects,
working with internationally recognized universities, global think tanks,
international NGOs, multilateral donor organizations and several Government
ministries and agencies.
Job Summary:  Laterite is looking for brilliant and highly-motivated
young people to assist with our fieldwork activities in Uganda. The position in
Kampala, Uganda but project locations will be finalized depending on project
area, place of residence and language ability of applicants. Enumerators will
attend Laterite training sessions, conduct surveys, and collect data using
pre-designed data collection instrument. This position is offered on a
project-basis. Successful candidates will be added to our database and be
contacted based on availability of positions. Enumerators will also benefit
from training sessions aimed at improving their professional development.
Job Summary:  The Enumerators and Field Supervisors should
have experience in collecting quantitative data using electronic data
collection instruments, ability to ask the questions exactly as they appear in
the questionnaire, keep a neutral attitude with the respondents, good
understanding and skill of properly managing respondents, interview locations
and maintain the pace of interview. And, they have the appropriate skill and
methods to implement in the data collection process to maintain high data
quality. They are excellent communicators in English and Luganda/Runyoro, have
excellent interpersonal skills, team players and can effectively solve problems
and adapt to changing situations.
They have a minimum
of a Bachelor’s degree related to economics, business, public policy or
statistics and at least 1-2 years of relevant professional experience. They are
willing to develop their professional skills and lead the growth of an
organization dedicated to social and economic development.
Based on interview
assessment and relevant experience, Laterite will select candidates to serve as
Field Supervisors.
Data Operations
Associate:  In addition to above, candidates
are eligible for a more senior position if they have 2 or more years of
experience managing large-scale field research projects and training enumerator
teams on survey instruments. Strong knowledge of development research (e.g.
implementing RCTs) and running complex and large data collection projects are a
pre-requisite.

performance, this can be converted to a full-time position with Laterite
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
Enumerators and
Field Supervisors
  • Attend training sessions
  • Conduct interviews in the field using survey instruments and
    electronic tablets
  • Test questionnaires designed by Laterite in the field
  • Travel to different locations to conduct field preparation,
    contacting local authorities and identifying potential research participants
  • Document issues that arise during fieldwork and communicate them to
    the supervisor
  • Keep track of expenses
  • Transmit data collected on a daily basis
  • Assist in any other tasks related to the delivery of the project at
    hand
Data Operations Associate
  • Design the strategy of field preparation and data collection
    activities for research studies, with support of management team
  • Draft training manuals for the field team
  • Draft budget and field plans and ensure they are logistically and
    financially efficient
  • Train enumerators on project specific information, protocols and
    instruments
  • Leads pilot activities and debriefing sessions
  • Monitor field activities during field preparation and data
    collection. Implement survey monitoring tools, spot-check visits and
    generate regular progress reports
  • Engage in feedback session with the field team during the project
    and upon its completion
  • Manage transcription and translation of qualitative data and ensure
    quality of final qualitative dataset.
  • Assist in any other tasks related to the delivery of the project at
    hand
  • Engage with client with support of management team

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
Pre-requisites for
Enumerators & Field Supervisor positions:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Statistics, Business Administration, Social
    Science or related field.
  • Experience in conducting quantitative and qualitative data
    collection in Uganda
  • Excellent verbal and written proficiency in English and
    Luganda/Runyoro and interpersonal skills
  • Good computer skills – especially the ability to use Microsoft Word
    and Excel
  • Willingness to work in rural areas and on weekends, if required
  • Willingness to travel for long periods of time, usually up to 60
    days
  • Sharp problem-solving skills
  • Consistent punctuality
  • Effective team-player
  • Quick learner
Pre-requisites for
Data Operations Associate positions (in addition to pre-requisites above):
  • 2+ years of experience in leading and managing large data collection
    teams
  • Excellent MS Excel skills and attention to detail
  • Experience leading survey training sessions, managing large budgets
    and field plans
  • Knowledge of socio-economic research and RCTs
