The MRC/UVRI Uganda
Virus Research Unit on AIDS was established following a request in 1988 from
the Uganda Government to the British Government for collaboration on the
research of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection and AIDS (Acquired
Immunodeficiency. The Unit is a center of excellence in HIV/AIDS related
research. It conducts large-scale epidemiological and intervention studies,
clinical trials, virological and immunological research and behavioural
studies, and has generated a wealth of research results that have been used to
inform policy and practice that have led to a large number of scientific
publications in peer reviewed journals over time.
Job Summary:  The Maintenance Assistant will be responsible
for overall management of the liquid nitrogen plant in Entebbe; tracking all
Liquid Nitrogen production and distribution to the different users and ensuring
optimum utilization and maintenance of the plant as well as other refrigeration
and maintenance work as assigned.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Collect and distribute Liquid Nitrogen to all Unit labs, dispatch
    all liquid nitrogen to the field stations and ensure receipt as
    dispatched.
  • Record all liquid nitrogen purchases by other non-Unit users and
    reconcile with accounts for payment or return as agreed.
  • Carries out preventive maintenance of Nitrogen plant and ensuring
    the plant is in clean condition.
  • Ensure optimum plant utilization working closely with supervisor.
  • Ensure all areas within the nitrogen plant are clean all the time.
  • Track service requirements for the nitrogen plant communicate to
    supervisor in due time.
  • Actively source for liquid nitrogen purchases during times of
    shortage or plant breakdowns.
  • Ensure plant area is secured all the time with controlled access as
    well as safety of all the equipment used at the plant.
  • Working with supervisor ensure all users have the appropriate
    protective wear whenever accessing the plant or whenever handling LN2.
  • Ensure safety of all containers and equipment used and work with
    supervisor for timely replacements.
  • Work closely with the technician to carry out Preventative
    maintenance of Air conditioners in the field stations when required.
  • Carries out preventive maintenance of Refrigeration and Air
    Conditioning equipment and systems.
  • Repairs faulty Refrigeration and Air Conditioning equipment.
  • Carries out routine checks and logs of the status of Refrigeration
    and Air Conditioning equipment.
  • Ensure the materials required for the smooth operation of the
    Refrigeration and Air Conditioning equipment are available.
  • Assists in verification of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning spares
    purchased/supplied.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The applicant for the Medical Research Council (MRC) UK /
    UVRI) Maintenance Assistant job placement must hold an ordinary diploma in
    refrigeration and air conditioning engineering from a recognized
    institution.
  • At least two years of refrigeration and air conditioning work in a
    busy HVAC company is required with knowledge about liquid nitrogen plant
    operation.
  • Must   have knowledge about
    liquid nitrogen plant operation and maintenance.
  • Must be able to trouble shoot HVAC technical problems with knowledge
    of cold chain equipment maintenance and installation.
  • Extensive knowledge of liquid nitrogen safe handling and
    transportation.
  • Be strong, in good health status and capable of performing heavy
    physical work.
  • Should have basic computer skills.
  • Must be able to work independently
  • Experience working with in a medical/Humanitarian organization is of
    an added advantage.
