About UNHCR:
The Office of the
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees was established on December 14,
1950 by the United Nations General Assembly. UNHCR’s mandate under the Statute
of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees is to lead
and co-ordinate action for international protection to refugees; seek permanent
solutions for the problems of refugees and safeguard refugee rights and
well-being. UNHCR has an additional mandate concerning issues of statelessness,
as it is given a designated role under Article 11 of the 1961 Convention on the
Reduction of Statelessness.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Conduct bio data interviews with refugees in the resettlement
    process
  • Tasked with verifying registration details of individuals in UNHCR
    resettlement processing and adding details to the proGres database as
    needed
  • Organisation of electronic and paper filing records for
    UNHCR-referred cases at the UNHCR extension office
  • Correspondence with resettlement countries on actions needed on
    UNHCR-referred cases (deferral responses, addition of new family members,
    etc)
  • In charge of the management of reception area of UNHCR office in
    absence of Senior Receptionist / Resettlement Assistant Conduct basic
    counselling and intake interviews for refugees who are attending the
    office for resettlement processing in accordance with resettlement SOPs.
  • Conducting other duties as required
Key Performance Indicators: The Resettlement Assistant will be required to complete 6 bio data
interviews per week for submission to the reviewing officer

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The ideal candidate for the United Nations UNHCR Resettlement
    Assistant job placement should hold a Bachelor’s degree in relevant area
    (e.g. social work, child development, social science, education, public
    administration etc.);
  • Prior experience of directly working with refugees / vulnerable
    persons
  • Prior experience of conducting basic counselling and interviews of
    refugees in the resettlement process
  • Good drafting skills (emails, template letters)
  • Good drafting skills in English is required.
  • Knowledge of and/or preparedness to become familiar with and abide
    by UNHCRs principles, Code of Conduct and humanitarian goals;
  • Knowledge of UNHCR resettlement processes and procedures;
  • Awareness of gender issues and how to apply a rights- and
    community-based approach to identify and respond to specific needs;
  • Good interviewing and counselling skills especially skills working
    with vulnerable individuals-highly desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in
    teams;
  • Ability to work in stressful situations;
  • Fluency in English a must
