Embassy in Kampala, Uganda has enjoyed diplomatic relations with Uganda for
over 30 years.  Ambassador Deborah R. Malac currently heads the U.S
Mission to Uganda.  The Mission is composed of several offices and
organizations all working under the auspices of the Embassy and at the
direction of the Ambassador.

Job Summary:  The Lead Janitor will be responsible for
maintaining the daily cleanliness of the Chancery and surrounding buildings. The incumbent could be assigned work tasks to support conference room setups, AV
support setup and moving tables and chairs for various functions within the
Chancery facility. Position directly supervises twelve (12) Janitorial Staff.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • The incumbent offers work guidance,
    supervises and trains approximately 12 janitors in the establishment and
    maintenance of janitorial procedures and processes; maintains discipline
    and effectiveness among his subordinates; establishes a budget and works
    within it; develops contacts with local supply vendors to ensure quality
    of merchandise and competitive prices.
  • Ensures facility janitors are managing
    the following: maintaining the daily cleanliness of USG owned properties
    to include: Chancery, MCAC, SCAC and the GSO Warehouse; setting up tables
    and chairs in conference rooms or for special events; supporting the
    movement of furniture and equipment; supporting make ready actions for
    incoming employees
  • The incumbent assigns work tasks,
    instructs on proper cleaning methods to accomplish assigned tasks and
    ensures that all tasks are completed satisfactorily.
  • Schedules annual leave and ensures
    coverage during both annual and sick leave to ensure that the coverage is
    maintained.
  • Completes Evaluation Performance Reports
    and takes appropriate disciplinary action of staff when necessary or
    directed.
  • Continually works to proactively
    increase morale and identify ways to support staff in their daily work
    environment.
  • Incumbent develops and advises the maintenance
    supervisor on budgetary requirements to implement the programs including
    the identification of appropriate commercial sources and cultivation of
    supplier relationships
  • Signs for and maintains all equipment
    and suppliers necessary for the satisfactory completion of assignments,
    including brooms, mops, buckets, vacuums, buffing machines, cleaning
    suppliers, and hand carts
  • Secures all tools, equipment and
    supplies to avoid theft or vandalism. This position description in no way

    to perform any other duties requested by his/her agency.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
NOTE:  All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed

  • The applicants for the US Embassy Lead
    Janitor career opportunity should have completed Secondary School both “O”
    and “A” level is required.
  • A minimum of three years general
    custodial operations required with one year of supervisory experience is
    required. Must have experience cleaning large scale facilities and be
    aware of all cleaning principles related to green environments.
  • Ability to develop written plans and
    schedules, must be able to train, supervise, coordinate and assign
    janitors. Knowledge on established practices, policies, and procedures of
    the janitorial trade is required.
  • Must be capable of performing some heavy
    physical work including wearing and training staff on how to use backpack
    HEPA filter vacuums. Must be able to work independently and be able to
    perform all job activities and duties in a responsible manner to avoid
    safety and health hazards.
  • Must be able to properly utilize
    appropriate personal protective equipment as required. Must inform
    maintenance supervisor of all accidents, illnesses, injuries either
    experienced or witnessed on property. Must possess a valid driver’s
    license.
  • General computer literacy is required in
    multiple applications (MS Office Suites).
  • Language Proficiency: Level 3 (Good Working Knowledge)
    speaking/reading/writing of English is required.
