The Law Development
Centre (LDC) has a mandate to provide legal education to lawyers and
non-lawyers, undertake research in topical legal issues, contribute to legal
reform, produce legal publications, teaching materials, law reports and also
provide community legal services.
Job Summary:
The Senior Legal Officer will coordinate all Bar Course programs and Legal Aid
services at the regional centre.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:  
  • To coordinate the implementation of teaching timetables and
    allocating subjects to lecturers at the study centre.
  • To participate in the development, review and update of the
    curricula.
  • To plan and coordinate teaching during the week to the assigned
    lecturers and ensuring that the subjects of the week are taught.
  • To prepare and submit weekly performance reports for Lecturers to
    the Head, Postgraduate Legal Studies and Legal Aid.
  • To coordinate clerkship program at the regional centre.
  • To supervise and assess the performance of staff under his/her
    supervision.
  • To interview and counsel clients.
  • To prepare legal documents.
  • To attend to walk-in clients.
  • To represent clients in court.
  • To develop training tools for stakeholders.
  • To train and sensitize stakeholders of legal aid.
  • To facilitate Continuing Legal Education and Street law programs.
  • To provide legal advice to the regional centre management and handle
    court cases involving the regional centre.
  • To supervise and report on the performance of LAC field staff and
    volunteers within the region.
  • To perform any other duties assigned by the Assistant Director and
    Head, Postgraduate Legal Studies and Legal Aid.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The applicant for the Senior Legal Officer job must hold a Bachelor
    of Law- (Hon) degree from a recognized University.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from Law Development Centre.
  • Master of Law – (LL.M) will be an added advantage.
  • Must be an enrolled Advocate of the High Court of Uganda.
  • A minimum of four (4) years’ work experience in teaching law or
    legal practice or legal aid service provision in a reputable law firm or
    organization providing legal aid services or institution of higher
    learning, two (2) of which must have been at the level of a Legal Officer
    or Lecturer or its equivalent.
  • Excellent supervisory, interpersonal relationship and management
    skills.
  • Knowledge of coordinating academic programmes and legal aid
    services.
  • He/she should be a person of high integrity.
  • Ability to produce quality results.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Good team player
  • Good report writing skills.
