About Us:
The MRC/UVRI Uganda
Virus Research Unit on AIDS was established following a request in 1988 from
the Uganda Government to the British Government for collaboration on the
research of HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection and AIDS (Acquired
Immunodeficiency. The Unit is a center of excellence in HIV/AIDS related
research. It conducts large-scale epidemiological and intervention studies,
clinical trials, virological and immunological research and behavioural
studies, and has generated a wealth of research results that have been used to
inform policy and practice that have led to a large number of scientific
publications in peer reviewed journals over time.
Job Summary: The
Assistant Laboratory Technologist will work as part of a scientific team
carrying out a wide variety of Basic Science ancillary laboratory tasks and
research experiments according to SOPs. They also provide all the required
technical support to enable the laboratory function effectively while adhering
to SOPs and health and safety guidelines.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:  
  • Tasked with receiving, processing and
    storing study samples according to SOPs so as to maximise their quality in
    subsequent testing
  • Performing SOP-guided laboratory
    experiments in order to produce reliable and precise data for scientific
    investigations: ELISpot, flow cytometry, Neutralisation assays, PCR,
    sequencing among others
  • Implementing GCLP practices: Cleaning
    and disinfecting equipment; Tracking equipment servicing requirements;
    Monitoring temperatures and liquid nitrogen levels; Data backup; Running
    equipment performance QCs
  • Ensuring that required reagents and
    supplies are in sufficient stocks and are kept securely in recommended
    conditions 
  • Performing IATA compliant shipment of
    samples to and from partner laboratories
  • Ensuring health and safety according to
    SOPs

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The applicant for the Medical Research
    Council (MRC) UK / UVRI Assistant Laboratory Technologist
    job placement must hold a Diploma in Laboratory Technology (Biological)
  • Two years of previous experience in
    working in a lab environment
  • Having trained in GCLP is an added
    advantage
  • At least a credit in Mathematics,
    Physics, Biology and Chemistry
