DefendDefenders is the East and
Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project. We seek to strengthen the work
of human rights defenders (HRDs) throughout the region by reducing their
vulnerability to the risk of persecution and by enhancing their capacity to
effectively defend human rights. DefendDefenders works in Burundi, Djibouti,
Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia (together with Somaliland), South
Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.
Job Summary: The Systems
Administrator will lead IT operations for the organisation. The successful
candidate must have sufficient technical expertise to hit the ground running
and work towards streamlining, maintaining, automating, and securing the
DefendDefenders IT infrastructure and device fleet according to industry best
practices. The Systems Administrator will work alongside the DefendersTech
department, a team dedicated to enable innovative, effective, and secure usage
of technology by human rights defenders in the East & Horn of Africa
sub-region.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Manage,
    service, and maintain overall DefendDefenders IT infrastructure:
  • Install
    and configure software and hardware
  • Manage
    network and servers
  • Set
    up accounts and workstations
  • Monitor
    performance and maintain systems according to requirements
  • Troubleshoot
    issues and outages
  • Upgrade
    systems with new releases and patches
  • Physical
    asset and infrastructure management
  • Investigate
    and recommend solutions to organisation needs
  • Work
    with service providers and vendors as required
  • Ensure
    office IT security through fleet management, access controls, backups,
    firewalls, and log monitoring
  • Train
    staff on new and core technologies as well as on-boarding and off-boarding
    staff members
  • Maintain
    an internal wiki with technical documentation, manuals and set IT policies
  • Enforce
    compliance with IT policies
  • Develop
    and implement IT Roadmap for the organisation
  • Manage
    and monitor IT budgets
  • Promote
    the innovative usage of IT within the organisation

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The
    applicant must hold a BSc/BA in Information Technology, Computer Science
    or a related discipline; professional certifications an asset
  • Three
    years of experience as a System Administrator, Network Administrator or
    similar role
  • Experience
    administering medium-complexity networks
  • Knowledge
    of system security (e.g. intrusion detection systems)
  • Data
    backup/disaster recovery and business continuity planning
  • Simple
    bash scripting for backups and other automated tasks
  • Familiarity
    with open source tools and ability to identify cost-effective solutions
  • Familiarity
    with the following tools or experience within the tool class:
  • Windows
    Server 2012 R2, Active Directory, WSUS, group policies
  • Linux/Apache/MySQL
    server stack and applications
  • BitDefender
    Enterprise AntiVirus
  • G-Suite
  • Virtualisation
  • HPE
    hardware
  • Unified
    Threat Management appliances
  • Windows
    10 and OS X Operating Systems
  • Cloud
    storage
  • Network
    Attached Storage
  • Virtual
