About USAID RHITES-EC Project:
University Research Co., LLC
(URC) is implementing the USAID Regional Health Integration to Enhance Health
Services in East Central Uganda Project (USAID/Uganda RHITES-EC) whose aim is
to support the implementation of a comprehensive integrated investment in
regional  health, nutritional assistance and HIV/AIDS programs. The
five-year project targets 11 districts in East Central Uganda with an estimated
total population of 4.1 million through a district-based integrated package of
quality health, nutrition, HIV / AIDS and child development services.
About Internship Program
The project will implement an
internship program in year two. The internship program shall have two cohorts
for six months each placing 75 interns per cohort-translating into 150
placements over the course of the year. Each district will have 6-7 internship
slots per cohort; with three internship placements at health facilities to
coordinate youth facility linkages, help with systems strengthening, MLE and support
youth community mobilization; the internship placements will also be placed
within additional economy sectors distinct to each district including:
construction, engineering, works, production, finance and administration.
Interns placed with private sector
institutions or companies will be oriented and trained to facilitate weekly
sessions with employees on health and coordinate site outreaches on VMMC, HTC,
family planning and other health services.
Job Summary: The
Internship Coordinator will be required to use independent analysis and
judgment to develop, coordinate, and supervise complex and varied
administrative tasks to provide exemplary career services to recent graduates
in the 11 RHITES-EC project districts. The Internship Coordinator should be a
talented individual that is committed to mentoring fresh graduates to become
successful members in their field industry. The Internship Coordinator shall
serve as a liaison between project and business/organizations in the area that
participate in the RHITES-EC Internship program. In addition, the Internship
Coordinator shall develop and maintain effective business relationships with
external work sites while incorporating professionalism, respect, integrity,
and compassion in all that they do.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:  
  • Work in close coordination with
    RHITES-EC management and partner organization, provide leadership in the
    development and implementation of a viable internship program in line with
    project objectives.
  • Work in coordination with HQ
    programmatic and international HR teams to develop, review and implement
    internship policies/manual and procedures
  • Work with RHITES-EC management to secure
    internship placements with districts, other government departments, civil
    society organizations and private sector entities/ organizations resident
    in the project implementation districts. 
  • Work with RHITES-EC HR, host
    institutions and proposed supervisors to develop scopes of work for the
    interns.
  • Work with the RHITES-EC HR to coordinate
    the identification, selection and placement of interns in the host
    organizations. This will also involve supporting an induction program to
    ensure the interns are properly settled in the host
    organizations.  
  • Arrange the logistics for an intern’s
    arrival at each assigned location. This includes ensuring workspace
    arrangement, setting up email accounts (if necessary), collecting forms,
    organizing the required paperwork, liaising with companies to provide
    workman’s compensation, etc. 
  • Develop and maintain a RHITES-EC internship
    program database. The posting, length and timing of the internship
    experience (i.e. cohort, number of weeks/months), working hours, applicant
    selection criteria, and compensation.)
  • Support the host institutions and
    supervisors to conduct regular performance reviews for the interns. The
    assessment should help to ensure the internship opportunities contribute
    to the career goals of the intern. 
  • Organize periodic professional
    development seminars, activities and sessions for interns. This will
    include identifying facilitators and preparing content for the various
    seminars, activities and sessions.
  • Serve as the main point-of-contact with
    applicants; work with district-based teams (DBTs), organizations and
    assessors to coordinate intern on-site activities.
  • Support the interns to select/ find
    professional mentors, develop and implement a mentorship plan.
  • Assist in the training and support of
    the interns through an orientation or mentoring program. The interns will
    be taken through the key elements of the youth curriculum and workforce
    development as part of their orientation and training before being placed
    for the internship.
  • Provide weekly updates to the Advisors,
    Health System Strengthening and Youth & Gender to encompass sites
    visited on intern follow-up; and send a weekly report to the Advisors,
    Employers and DCDO
  • Build partnerships with employers to
    develop graduate opportunities for experiential endeavors locally within
    the districts.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The applicant for the USAID RHITES-EC
    Internship Coordinator career opportunity must hold a Bachelor’s degree in
    Social Work & Social Administration, Social Sciences, Development
    Studies, Human Resources, Education, or a related field.
  • At least two years supervisory or
    managerial experience.
  • Proven experience in coordinating and
    managing capacity building / internship programs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of corporate
    and/or non-profit human resource management practices and principles.
  • Knowledge, understanding and skills in
    experiential education and career advising.
  • Demonstrated Project management skills
  • Must have superior interpersonal skills
    with a demonstrated commitment to cultural and diversity.
  • Ability to research and quickly develop
    knowledge of employer recruiting strategies, job market trends,
    occupational, career and personal growth.
  • Proficiency with technology; including
    but not limited to the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and
    work independently as a leader and as part of a team.
  • Negotiation and problem solving skills
