About NUYOK Program:
Caritas Kotido Diocese is part
of a consortium led by Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to run a five-year Food
for Peace (FFP) USAID funded program called NUYOK to build resilience to shocks,
enhance livelihoods and improve food security and nutrition for vulnerable
rural families in three districts of Karamoja viz: Abim, Nakapiripirit and
Napak – which are home to 406,880 people living in an estimated 58,126
households. Caritas Kotido Diocese through support from CRS will implement the
activities of NUYOK Programme in Abim District.
Job Summary: The Livestock
Officer will be responsible for livestock programme activities in the NUYOK Programme.
S/he will be working with the livestock farmers, veterinary officers,
veterinary para-professionals, veterinarians without borders (VWB) and
community animal health workers through proper livestock programming and
planning. S/he will work with the vet techs as needed and will report to the
Livelihoods Program Manager.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Work
    closely with the project team to identify and pilot interventions that
    improve the productivity and competitiveness of the livestock industry.
  • Develop
    work plans and budget and required reports.
  • Monitor
    and evaluate all livestock related activities in target households.
  • Supervise
    livestock agents.
  • Actively
    promote preservation and storage of local agricultural and industrial
    biproducts.
  • Support
    businesses and youth groups to develop new livestock-related businesses,
    such as feed block manufacture, apiculture, silage production, milk
    distribution, and fattening activities.
  • Work
    closely with livestock health companies and service providers
  • Work
    closely with district veterinary offices and veterinary extension workers.
    The Livestock Officer will support initiatives to improve herd
    composition.
  • The
    livestock officer will foster good calf management practices, including
    creep feeding, milking frequency and calf-pen hygiene.
  • Conduct
    on-site field visits regularly to monitor progress of activities and
    provide strategic measures for progress to maximize the programmes’
    economic and social impacts to the community
  • Analyze project implementation
    strategies to identify constraints to program success and provide timely
    recommendations;
  • Provide
    data in support of team’s submission of timely weekly, monthly and
    quarterly reports that will be indicative of program progress during
    implementation.
  • Identify,
    assess and develop networks and strategies for potential private, public
    and civil society sector partnership with NUYOK program
  • Conduct
    himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to
    bring credit to Caritas Kotido and to not jeopardize its mission.
  • Perform
    any other duties as assigned



Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The
    applicant must hold a degree in either of the following; Livestock
    production and management, Animal Production Technology and Management and
    Veterinary Medicine.
  • At
    least two to five years of experience with NGOs/FBOs in livestock
    production activities especially in a rural or pastoral community.
  • Ability
    to interact effectively with a wide range of partners; private sector, government
    and civil society.
  • Exhibit
    skills in team work, holding community consultations and organizational development;
  • Excellent
    reporting, communication and representation skills
  • Willingness
    to work in the field with livestock producers, community animal health workers,
    kraal leaders, businesses in the value chain and communities
  • Possession
    of a valid riding permit is a must.
