Job Summary: The Lead
Driver is responsible for managing Self Help Africa drivers for the efficient
operation and maintenance of the Self Help Africa motorcycle and motor vehicle
fleet, for driving and ensuring the safety and security of authorised
passengers on board in line with Self Help Africa policy and the traffic laws
and regulations of Uganda. Also perform minor mechanical tasks.
Key Responsibilities:      
Supervisory Task:
  • Responsible
    for managing Self Help Africa Drivers
  • Ensure
    adequate training for Drivers
  • Follow
    up the driver planning and scheduling using Outlook Calendar and register
    transportation request
Transportation & Safety
  • Provide
    transportation for Self Help Africa staff and visitors as instructed.
  • Ensure
    safety of passengers & luggage at all times.
  • Observe
    speed limits and all Self Help Africa travel guidelines.
  • Ensure
    use of seat belts at all times.
  • Ensure
    proper communication procedures.
Vehicle & Motorcycle
Maintenance
  • Schedule
    annual vehicle & motorcycle examination for Self Help Africa vehicles
    & motorcycles as required
  • Apply
    for the renewal for the vehicle & motorcycle licenses as required
  • Determine
    when and what kind of maintenance the vehicles & motorcycles need,
    keep track of general maintenance schedules, especially car tyre condition
  • Ensure
    sound running of the vehicles & motorcycles assigned and arrange minor
    repairs where necessary
  • Check
    oil and tyres properly and ensure that the service vehicles &
    motorcycles are in clean condition, both inside and outside
  • Keep
    track of timely vehicle & motorcycle insurance renewals and     inform the Senior Administrator 3
    weeks in advance of renewals
  • Update
    monthly mileage records
  • Maintain
    log book of each service vehicle & motorcycle on a daily basis 
  • Ensure
    the maintenance of vehicles & motorcycles in sound mechanical
    condition.
  • Ensure
    that the washing & general cleaning of vehicles & motorcycles is
    maintained.
  • Ensure
    that vehicles & motorcycles are fueled and serviced promptly.
  • Report
    any faults/breakdowns & accidents immediately to the Senior
    Administrator
  • Ensure
    First Aid Kits are complete and spare & tools are in allocated
    vehicles and/motorcycles.
  • Ensure
    that vehicle and motorcycle tools are always kept in allocated vehicles
    and motorcycles.
Record Keeping:
  • Ensure
    that all vehicles and motorcycles have log sheets and pens.
  • Maintain
    accurate vehicle and motorcycles records to ensure that all trips, fuel
    fill-ups, time and mileage readings are recorded.
  • Ensure
    fuel fill ups entry is made in the log sheet timely,
  • Ensure
    timely vehicle request forms are filled and submitted for travel
    allocation
  • Collate
    and submit vehicle log sheets on a monthly basis to the Senior Officer
  • Ensure
    to check vehicles on a monthly basis and compile check list reports to the
    Senior Administrator
  • Ensure
    field trip reports are submitted by the Drivers
  • Collate
    and submit on a monthly basis vehicle repair reports to the Senior
    Administrator
Mechanical Activities:
  • Perform
    minor repairs as required and recommend major cases to the garage.
  • Road
    test and certify all vehicles from the garages.
  • Any
    other duties assigned by the Senior Administrator.



Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The
    prospective employee for the Self Help Africa (SHA) Lead Driver must hold
    a minimum qualification of Uganda Certificate in Education (O-Level)
  • Five
    years of driving and Mechanical experience, with experience driving in a
    reputable firm, public body, or NGO as an added advantage
  • The
    Lead Driver must have completed a Defensive Driving Course
  • The
    Lead Driver must have adequate computer knowledge
  • Extensive
    knowledge of the Ugandan highway code
  • Thorough
    understanding of the Geographical area of assignment
  • English
    Language proficiency and knowledge of 2 or more languages
  • Flexibility
    and willingness to adjust to changing responsibilities.
  • The
    Lead Driver must hold a valid permit: Class A, B and DL Driver’s License.
  • The
    Lead Driver must be at least 30 years of age and above
  • The
    Lead Driver must have basic and mechanical knowledge of motor vehicles
  • The
    Driver must be prepared to work away from home from time to time
  • Desirable
  • Experience
    of working with Non-Governmental organisations
  • Experience
    of management and supporting Drivers
  • Excellent
    verbal, analytical, organisational and written skills
  • People
    management skills
  • Proactive
    and motivated with a strong commitment to Self Help Africa’s vision,
    mission and values
  • Attention
    to detail and the ability to produce timely and accurate reports
