internationally focused unit of Wageningen University & Research Centre.
CDI works on processes of innovation and change through facilitating
innovation, brokering knowledge and supporting capacity development. The
proposed Integrated Seed Sector Development (ISSD) Plus Uganda programme is
coordinated by CDI and implemented by Wageningen UR Uganda, the legal entity in
Uganda. The four-year ISSD Plus project to be funded by the Embassy of the
Kingdom of the Netherlands, Kampala. The programme aims to strengthen the
development of a vibrant, pluralistic and market-oriented seed sector that is
able to address key challenges that hamper the seed sector development such as
seed quality assurance and availability of foundation seed.

Job Summary: The Vegetable
Agronomist will provide practical, technical assistance and guidance to the
private sector in implementing the in-depth farmer training and commercial
variety demonstrations. The focus is on promotion of advanced vegetable
varieties.

Key Duties and
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities:
- Work
closely with (Dutch) seed companies and their Ugandan distributers to
ensure that the identification and selection of location and host farmers
for the training sites/variety demonstrations conform to ISSD
specifications. - Guide
the set-up of the variety demonstrations/training sites to ensure
conformance to the ISSD specifications. - The
jobholder will identify production constraints or bottlenecks and develop
means to address them - Responsible
for quality assurance in regard to variety demonstrations and
training delivered to the farmers - Monitor
and assess agronomic practices at the variety demonstration and training
sites and advise on timely corrective actions to implementing partners
where necessary - Follow-up
with implementing partners for timely submission of reports on the
demonstration sites and training activities. - Assist
seed companies/ local distributors to organize field days and assist in
mobilisation of farmers to attend the field days - Conduct
training programs for both the sector professionals and vegetable
producers. - Prepare
and submit reports as required. - Participate
in preparing Radio messages that are key in promoting use of advanced

Experience:
Experience:
- The ideal candidate must hold Diploma in
Agriculture from a reputable institution. Possession of a Bachelor’s
Degree in Agriculture related fields is an added advantage - At least three years’ experience working
in Ugandan Vegetable private sector - Hands-on experience in agronomic practices
related to the use of advanced vegetable varieties. - Skills and experience in setting up
demonstration plots - Previous experience in training of
trainers (TOT) and development of training programs - Practical attitude, hands-on and
self-motivator - Willingness to travel extensively within
Uganda - Ability to work independently and take
initiative - Proven ability to work as a team with
strong interpersonal skills - Previous experience in delivery of
extension services - Strong computer skill, proficiency in word
processing MS Word, MS Excel, and Internet use; - Excellent conceptual and analytical skills
directly related to the work in the vegetable production sector, including
excellent writing skills. - Fluent in English with good reporting
skills
