The Medical Research Council/ Uganda Virus Research Institute
(MRC/UVRI) based at the Uganda Virus Research Institute in Entebbe is a
bilateral multi-disciplinary research organization funded by, the Medical
Research Council (UK) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in
Uganda under the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and other
donor agencies. Established in 1988, the MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on AIDS
is an internationally recognized center of excellence for research on HIV
infection and related diseases, contributing knowledge on the revolving
epidemic, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and
prevention, and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and
worldwide.
Job Summary: The Head of
Data Management will manage the data programmers and data management staff
(data managers, data management assistants, data archivists and study/filing
clerks). The position requires experience in: research data management and good
clinical practices related to data collection, entry, cleaning, archiving and
retrieval; development of data management plans and general understanding of
data needs in the different phases of clinical trials development and other
epidemiological studies; and preparing briefs on data management for funding
applications. The position involves participation in project team meetings,
interactions with senior management, funders and collaborators.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
  • Oversee the data management teams at
    national and international level in database design and data validation
    plans development
  • Formulate data management plans for the
    unit.
  • Keenly monitor studies data flow from
    collection to analysis.
  • Actively contribute to research protocol
    development in particular, the data management related sections (e.g.
    design of case report forms, data management and sharing plans, storage
    and retrieval).
  • Generate queries related to the data
    collected from a wide range of studies.
  • Oversee the performance of the data
    management staff across the unit, ensure acceptable output levels
  • Provide response to queries, related to
    studies data, posed by monitors, auditors, regulatory agencies and
    sponsors
  • Prepare oral and written reports to
    effectively communicate results on studies progress to senior management
    and other investigators.
  • Working closely with the training section
    ensures training needs for the section are identified and addressed in
    line with unit needs.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
  • The applicant for the MRC Head of Data
    Management career placement should hold a Master’s degree in a data science related field with at least 10
    years of experience) in a large international research organisation
    carrying out clinical, laboratory and social science research.
  • Demonstrated
    expertise in data management plans development and implementation
  • Knowledge
    of data monitoring and audit
  • Prior
    work experience in a research setting with primary focus on
    clinical trials and observational studies
  • Hands-on
    knowledge of the use of statistical software such as STATA
  • Possess
    expert knowledge of database design and data management platforms such
    OpenClinica, Redcap, Open Data Kit (ODK), MS Access and My SQL
  • Computer
    literacy i.e. MS office skills (Word, Excel, power point) and experience
    in generating graphs and figures.
  • Excellent
    verbal, written communication and interpretation skills
  • Proven
    ability to work in a team environment
  • Highly
    motivated, good attitude towards work and results oriented.
