Job Summary: The Bureau
Chief will coordinate the Jinja editorial bureau operations, get well
researched and most up to date regional reports on daily events and ensure that
the written copy meets established editorial journalistic objectives ethics,
house style and delivered within set deadlines.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
  • Discusses
    news gathering assignments with the Regional Editor
  • Prepares
    the day’s docket by listing down all the regional stories items and sends
    docket to the Deputy News Editor
  • The
    jobholder briefs the deputy news editor on the stories gathered and writes
    the selected ones within set deadlines
  • Takes
    notes on location, carries out interviews, checks facts and tape records
    as the case may be
  • Researches
    and provides background information to make stories complete and at
    editor’s request, supplies more relevant information on stories of
    interest.
  • Assigns
    reporters and gives them guidance on what to look for in stories
  • The
    incumbent also debriefs reporters on stories they bring back and ensures
    that reporters do their stories to meet deadlines
  • Edits
    stories for accuracy, balance, fairness, legal soundness and that
    they meet journalistic ethics, editorial objectives and house style
  • Files
    the complete stories to the Regional Editor within set deadlines
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience: 
  • The applicants for the MPL Bureau Chief
    job placement should hold a University
    Degree in Mass Communication or any related field from an
    accredited institution.
  • Diploma
    in Journalism
  • A
    minimum of three to five years of journalism experience and demonstrated
    writing and editing experience in a newsroom
  • Excellent
    writing and editing skills, with good understanding of editorial
    practices, writing and editing requirements in a busy newsroom
  • Keen
    eye for detail, with excellent spelling, grammar and punctuation skills.
  • Good
    organizational skills and ability to work effectively with the team and
    collate material from multiple sources
  • Ability
    to track, review and manage team performance effectively
  • Excellent
    interpersonal and communication skills
  • Highly
    analytical skills
  • Strong
    writing and reporting skills
  • Flexible
    and agile
