The Medical Research Council/ Uganda Virus Research Institute
(MRC/UVRI) based at the Uganda Virus Research Institute in Entebbe is a
bilateral multi-disciplinary research organization funded by, the Medical
Research Council (UK) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in
Uganda under the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and
other donor agencies. Established in 1988, the MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit on
AIDS is an internationally recognized center of excellence for research on HIV
infection and related diseases, contributing knowledge on the revolving
epidemic, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and
prevention, and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and
worldwide.
Job Summary: The Senior
Database Programmer will handle data programming in the MRC unit especially in
the Statistics section.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
Study Planning:
  • Support Data Managers to Design/program
    new complex Database Management Information Systems (DMIS) – data entry
    screens, tables, queries, reports, modules, data cleaning system, database
    management menu screens.
  • Develop Standard Operating Procedures
    (SOP) for the DMIS he has programmed.
Design and write new
database programs in Visual Basic:
  • Program GPC and other studies’ data
    collection programs for UMPCs.
  • Program data capture screens for
    Kyamulibwa clinic and other studies.
Modify and update
pre-written database programs in Visual Basic:
Reprogramming the
Lablink system whenever there are new studies or changes in the HIV testing
algorithm.
Database Management:
  • Demonstrate understanding of the
    relationship between data from different studies, and/or across different
    databases.
  • Write more complex queries for cleaning,
    checking and managing data.
  • Maintain full documentation for databases,
    so that they can be easily used by database managers, and other staff
    employed on the studies.
  • Emphasis is on the clean and clear
    application of tables, queries and modules to organise information.
Programming support
outside the Statistics section:
  • Provide programming support to
    Masaka/Entebbe clinic pharmacy;
  • Provide support to Administration for
    obtaining reports on the vehicle tracking system.
  • To facilitate and program electronic data
    capture from laboratory tests.
Collaborations: Work on GPC data normalization with a
consultant system analyst.
Supervision: Supervise Data Programmers.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
  • The applicant for the MRC Senior Database
    Programmer job placement should hold a bachelor’s degree in a database programming related field (such
    as IT, Statistics, database programming, Software engineering,
    Computer Science)
  • Possession
    of a Master’s degree in Information systems or related field.
  • At
    least three years’ experience in programming using more than one language
    (Ms Access VBA, Java, .Net Languages);
  • A
    minimum of three years’ experience working with at least one database
    management systems (My SQL, SQL server, or MS Access)
  • One
    year of experience in working with large databases
  • Previous
    experience working with medical/health related databases.
  • Novelty
    and ability to carry out independent work.
