About US:
The
AIDS Support Organization (TASO Uganda) is an organisation contributing to a
process of preventing HIV infection, restoring hope and improving the quality
of Life of persons, families and communities affected by HIV infection and
disease.
Job Summary: The Laboratory Technologist will manage sample
processing and testing on all the samples received in accordance with set
policies and standards with ability to operate all various types of laboratory
equipment.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Participate in center work plans and budgets
  • List the items and reagents needed to achieve
    the planned activities
  • Testing samples for CD4, Hematology, clinical
    chemistry, microbiology and other routine tests as may be requested
    including carrying out of proficiency testing
  • Observe QA/QC while performing all laboratory
    procedures with high maintenance of laboratory equipments.
  • Request for laboratory supplies and
    participating in inventory and stock taking
  • Reading fridge and room temperatures and
    charting them in addition to preparation of working reagents where
    necessary
  • Prepare the patient for sampling
  • Collect the right sample from the right
    patient at the right time
  • Carry out the test procedures correctly,
    accurately and timely
  • Record and report results according to  SOPs
  • List topics of relevance
  • Identify target group
  • Identify teaching aids
  • Participate in EQA and IQA
  • Monitor and interpret QC date to benefit the
    laboratory
  • Keep record of QC data as per procedures and
  • Fill and maintain QC logs
  • Carry out client interviews
  • Participate in writing and updating SOPs
  • Make specifications of required HIV test kits
    and other laboratory supplies and reagents to be procured, and carry out
    verifications of the supplies and reagents delivered
  • Monitor inventory levels and order materials
    and supplies in accordance with established TASO policies and procedures
  • Monitor 
    the usage of laboratory supplies
  • Properly and accurately use of PPE
  • Participate in writing a safety manual
  • Follow laboratory safety guidelines
  • Ensure safe disposal of laboratory waste
  • Maintain a clean and safe working environment
  • Keep record of all incidences in the
    laboratory
  • Demarcate 
    emergency exits
  • Follow standard laboratory formulas and
    procedures including safety guidelines, the use of personal protective
    equipment and awareness of blood- borne pathogens as emphasized by the
    Uganda National Laboratory Policy
  • Monitor the functionality of laboratory
    equipment and ensure that they are in good working condition
  • Maintain quality assurance and control in the
    laboratory
  • Maintain security of laboratory specimens and
    samples
  • Carry out mentorship of lower cadre, stand
    ins and student attatchees
  • Keep abreast with the current laboratory
    techniques and protocols
  • In service laboratory training
  • Carry out and document proficiency testing
  • Develop a career development plan
  • Keep record of every professional award
    achieved
  • Carry mentorship to in-service laboratory
    personnel attached to the site
  • Participate in laboratory improvement program
    in the laboratory
  • Document all activities carried out using
    relevant MOH tools
  • Make and submit periodic reports to the
    Medical Coordinator and to the Laboratory Services Specialist
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The Laboratory Technologist must hold a Bachelor’s
    degree in Medical Laboratory Technology with a bias in either clinical
    chemistry, Microbiology and Hematology. GCLP and CLP training will be an
    added advantage.
  • At least three years of laboratory work
    experience in HIV research based organization is required and registered
    with the AHPC
  • Special Knowledge of clinical laboratory
    practices
  • Working knowledge of laboratory diagnosis
    techniques
  • Basic facts about HIV/AIDS
  • HIV/AIDS Care policies and procedures
  • Ability to perform complete range of
    laboratory functions is required
  • Laboratory Technology skills
  • Good computer skills
  • Stores management skills
  • Good counselling skills
  • High degree of integrity and confidentiality
  • Empathy
  • Patience
