Job Summary: The Driver will be responsible for the safe and
responsible driving of programme vehicles Routine maintenance and care of
programme vehicles Running of official errands and assisting with other
programme office services   . The
jobholder also takes careful note of all available information concerning
street- conditions, effective routes and locations whilst strictly adhering to
GIZ rules and safety standards.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
1. Driving and
Chauffeuring:
  • Drive programme vehicles safely and chauffeur
    programme staff, official visitors, consultants and guests to official
    destinations
  • Assists in the transportation of goods
2. Maintenance of Cars:
  • Regularly cleans the inside and outside of
    the programme vehicles
  • Checks oil, water, brake and clutch fluids on
    a daily basis; tyre pressures, battery water, and overall vehicle
    condition on a monthly basis or after 5000 km whichever comes earlier;
    tests lights, brakes, bodywork for dents, etc.
  • Responsible for programme vehicle documents
    and its care, keeps vehicle logbook on a daily basis and registers each
    monthly check
  • Calculates the petrol, oil, and lubricant
    (POL) use on a monthly basis, is responsible for a special petty cash for
    POL and submits vouchers to accounting on a monthly basis
  • Regularly reports the need for maintenance
    and undertakes minor repairs
  • Keenly monitors and reports the need to renew
    car insurance incl. official cars used by other programme personnel
  • Keenly checks other programme vehicles used
    by programme personnel (incl. cars assigned to Development Advisors) when
    parked at the programme office (incl. oil, water, brake and clutch fluids;
    tyre pressures and overall condition, battery water, and overall vehicle
    condition; tests lights, brakes, bodywork for dents; time for next service
    (every 5000km)
  • Immediately reports any involvement of the
    programme/official vehicle in case of any accident, or any damage or theft
    of equipment from the vehicle
3. Road Information:
  • Uses all available information (incl. actual
    radio news on traffic i situations) to update knowledge of street
    conditions, effective routes and locations daily
  • Exchanges this information with other drivers
  • Ensures his/her mobile phone is charged and
    reachable during office hours at all times
  • Runs errands for the programme/office, e.g.
    delivery of letters/messages, payment of bills, and makes minor purchases
    of office supplies
  • Compiles the logbook correctly and accurately
    Does not use the car for his/her own private purposes at any time. Such
    misuse of the vehicle is considered a serious misconduct, and will
    immediately lead to a warning and may result in dismissal
4. Other
Duties/Additional Tasks:
  • If there is no outside driving activity, s/he
    stands by in the office, supports other colleagues in case of need, and
    does other office work
  • Reports any incident whilst off duty that may
    affect his/her driving licence entitlement, as well as any newly known
    health problems that may affect his/her ability to drive
  • Assists in keeping 3rd party insurance of
    programme cars updated.
  • Supports programme expatriates in renewing
    and obtaining valid driving licences
  • Undertakes driving lessons with new programme
    expatriates to familiarize them with Ugandan traffic rules and conditions
  • Checks logbooks for Development Advisors cars
  • Undertakes further job training related to
    his/her position and duties, if required. Special training programs shall
    be identified and selected jointly with the head of programme and the GIZ
    Security Task Team
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The applicant should hold a Diploma or High
    School certificate
  • Professional certificate in motor vehicle
    repair is an added advantage
  • A minimum of three years’ working experience
    as a driver in an NGO setting with references
  • No history of major accidents within the past
    3 years
  • The applicant should have done a defensive
    driving course and first, aid training
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license
  • Excellent English and local language skills
  • Discipline and punctuality
  • Stress tolerance and patience
  • Familiarity with Karamoja region, Mbale
    region, and water programme field areas of operation
