4 Development (www.tech4development.com) is a social enterprise that develops
innovative
digital solutions with the goal of addressing some of East Africa’s most
pressing
development
challenges in a profitable way. Following in-depth research on small and medium
enterprise (SME) in Uganda and Kenya, conducted in partnership with the UN in
2015, we are currently setting up a B2B mCommerce Venture in Kampala. Our aim
is to transform how Ugandan SMEs communicate and transact with suppliers and
buyers through the use of smartphones. While offline quality control and
delivery services play an important role, it is an Android App that will stand
at the heart of our business model. We will initially focus our efforts to SMEs
and entrepreneurs in Kampala before expanding into other regions and countries.
Our methodology to develop a meaningful product and profitable business model
is deeply rooted in design thinking and lean startup principles. This means we
spend a lot of time observing and talking with users, formulating and testing
assumptions about their needs, building prototypes, and continuously iterating
our technology and business. To do so effectively, we work in a non-hierarchical
& multi-disciplinary team of 6 people out of our beautiful team-space at
Venture Lab East Africa in Bugolobi.
Job Summary: The Lead UI/UX Designer should show a strong
entrepreneurial mind that buys into our vision of using technology and new
business models to radically improve small business practices in Uganda.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Identify user and context needs and translate
    them into requirements/use cases;
  • Render support in identifying and designing the
    user journey and key workflows of the tool;
  • Create interface concepts to ensure user
    adoption and desirability;
  • Draw wireframes & sketches to illustrate
    functionalities of interface components;
  • In charge 
    of testing business model and solution hypothesis and prototypes
    activities with;
  • Use prototyping tools to create interactive
    design early in the design process;
  • Significantly contribute to developing the
    service strategy for the tool;
  • Develop and document the interaction design
    framework for the tool;
  • Test and co-develop the design language for
    the tool;
  • Communicate effectively with clients and
    stakeholders about the design process and outcomes of the tool to ensure
    ownership and shared understanding.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The applicant should have at least four years’
    experience in UI/UX Design (incl. for Android Apps).
  • The candidates should be able to apply
    creative problem solving to difficult design challenges, be analytical,
    and have excellent skills in communicating ideas and solutions to users,
    the team, and partners.
  • In addition, candidates should be passionate
    about working in a fast-paced, creative and culturally diverse environment
    while adapting quickly to changing needs and priorities.
  • Show commitment to social change and our vision
    for digital empowerment;
  • Passion for user-centered UI/UX design;
  • Good command of user research and UI/UX tools
    such as mock-ups, wireframing, questionnaire development, etc;
  • Previous experience in designing Android
    Applications;
  • Previous experience in designing in low
    resource settings;
  • Team-oriented and proactive working style;
  • Excellent collaboration skills in multi-disciplinary
    project teams;
  • Excellent oral and written English skills;
  • Sound user experience design skills and
    knowledge of relevant digital platforms;
  • Cultural understanding and sensitivity;
  • Previous experience working with lean startup
    methods, HCD, and agile development is an added advantage
  • Prior experience in developing Web
    Applications is desired
  • Previous experience with WordPress is an
    advantage
  • Desire to contribute to the wider technical
    community through collaboration;
  • Previous experience working on digital B2B or
    B2C eCommerce projects in East Africa is desired
  • Willingness and the ability to travel
    nationally;
