Palm Growers Trust (KOPGT) supports oil palm farmers in Kalangala to grow oil
palm and market the crop for the benefit of the oil palm growers. KOPGT
provides long term reliable support to small scale oil palm farmers and out
growers’ scheme, Bugala and outlaying Islands in Kalangala District. KOPGT
works closely with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF)
-Vegetable Oil Development Project Phase two (V0DP2) to achieve its mission of
supporting farmers.
Job Summary:  The Field Officer will ensure that the oil
palm development activities in a particular block are carried out in accordance
with the laid down guidelines. The KOPGT Field Officer will be tasked to ensure
that the implementation of the KOPGT small holder oil palm growing scheme in
Kalangala District is effective and efficient.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
·        
The incumbent will mobilize farmers into groups for delivery
of Extension services.
·        
Identify farmers’ needs and provide responses as
appropriate.
·        
Provide Agricultural Advisory and Training service
to oil palm farmer’s in collaboration with Agricultural staff at Kalangala
District Local Government (KDLG) and Oil Palm Uganda Limited (OPUL).
·        
Conduct agronomic demonstrations, training or
exposure to best oil palm agronomic practices.
·        
Provide technical support to the farmers in other
related agricultural enterprises in addition to oil palm.
·        
Support the Unit/Block leaders and farmers to
identify suitable land and plan the schedules for the recommended services and
farm inputs in oil palm development.
·        
Manage oil palm development stages in land
preparation, lining, planting, crop maintenance, ffb harvesting and collection
at Block level.
·        
Manage and monitor performance of farmer’s
activities in oil palm cultivation.
·        
Work closely with the Credit Officer, sensitize
farmers on savings and credit.
·        
Technically support the Farmer Loan Application
Process.
·        
Technically approve stages of oil palm development
for farmer’s loan payments.
·        
Attend technical and other training as required.
·        
Actively engage in the preparation of work plans,
budgets and reports as required by the Secretariat.
·        
The job holder will support the Manager in ensuring
a good working relationship with Oil Palm Uganda Limited (OPUL) to ensure the
farmers obtain the necessary inputs for the cultivation of oil palm.
·        
Prepare and submit timely and accurate reports of
all progress and future activities to the KOPGT Manager.
·        
Perform any other duties delegated by the Manager
from time to time as the KOPGT Secretariat may require.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience: 
·        
The ideal candidates for the Field Officer jobs must
hold Diplomas in Agriculture or Agro-forestry, from recognized Institutions in
Uganda. Possession of degrees in Agriculture Sciences will be an added
advantage.
·        
At least two years’ working experience in practical
agricultural production, preferably in plantation agriculture.
·        
Demonstrated ability to empathize and communicate
with farmers to provide information and advice in an acceptable way.
·        
Possess the ability to listen to farmers.
·        
Highly pro-active approach to work with the ability
to take field level decisions.
·        
Ability to observe and take action as appropriate.
·        
Willingness to work away from home and to spend at
least five full days per week on the island.
·        
Willingness to work during unsocial hours.
·        
Computer literacy skills i.e. proficiency in at
least two MS Office Suite packages.
·        
Good report writing skills.
·        
Hold a current driving license.
·        
Willingness and ability to ride a motor cycle.
·        
Fluent in the local language of Kalangala District.
