Job Summary: The Construction Safety Officer will offer valuable assistance and direction to management, projects, personnel, sub-contractors and consultants in the administration, implementation and maintenance of health and safety program
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of the company’s Safety and Loss Prevention Program including safe work practices/ Safe Job Procedures and the Site Emergency Response Plan;
  • Monitor the safety performance of all on-site workers to ensure that all workers on the site work safely;
  • Encourage and educate employees to take precautions and adhere to safety rules to protect themselves and the equipment they use from damage;
  • Identify and review various health and safety concerns specific to work site and ensure construction site activities do not put non-construction site people outside of the site at risk;
  • Investigate all injuries, accidents and near misses. Identify the causes and advise on any improvement in safety standards that need to be done;
  • Review accident summary reports and make appropriate action when accident trends are unfavorable.
  • Ensure safety reports and data are collected and submitted to the ED as required, including:
    • Man hours and safety logistics;
    • Copies of accident reports;
    • Description of unsafe conditions discovered and steps taken to correct these conditions ;
    • Copy of inspection reports on equipment;
    • Copy of safety inspection checklists or visit summary reports;
    • Copy of audit reports and actions taken and;
    • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of and enforce OH&S legislation and codes of practice;
  • Provide internal or arrange external safety training to employees;
  • Act as a key liaison with the government (OH&S), ambulance services and hospitals, management, subcontractors and workers regarding aspects of health and safety on and off the job;
  • Ensure daily assessments are being conducted as per the company policy;
  • Perform one audit each year to maintain valid Audit status;
  • Coordinate and conduct the following according to the company’s policy and OH&S legislation-Site orientations-Weekly Safety Meetings-Safety inspections-Audits-Joint Work Site Health and Safety Meetings;
  • Update and display safety polices and pertinent information on the company bulletin board;
  • Advise and guide on appropriate protective equipment and on the cost of implementing changes;
  • Maintain an inventory list of equipment purchased;
  • Establishing inspection schedules for all tools, major equipment, lifting devices and mobile equipment to ensure safe operating conditions and compliance with current regulations;
  • Lead by example;
  • Perform any other duties that may be allocated to you from time to time;
Key Performance Areas: 
  • Responsible for the implementation of all Safety Orientation for all new projects and to monitor on a weekly basis all existing projects.
  • Written weekly inspections reports.
  • Investigate and complete all accident/ incident reports in a timely manner.
  • Initiate and review the following on a weekly basis; daily hazardous assessment forms, tool box meetings, joint health and safety committee meetings.
  • Prepare the monthly safety report to the Senior Management for review and comments.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The ideal candidate should preferably hold an Advanced First Aid II;
  • S / he must be up to date with legal and technological developments;
  • Possess advanced computer skills with experience using software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point;
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills, track and diplomacy to ensure the implementation of OH&S legislation and company policies;
  • Have good level of physical fitness and stamina, be able to cope under pressure;
  • Possess the ability to keep confidential information
  • Professional conduct with both internal and external customers;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to all facets of the role; working towards the achievement of the company goals and objectives;
  • Highly capable of all well written monthly reports and charts;
