(UNATU) exists to promote and protect the social, intellectual, economic and
professional interests of its members/teachers as a per-requisite to enhancing
the status of teaching profession.
Job Summary: The Accountant
will lead the department and ensure that the Union’s financial management,
accounting processes and Internal Controls; are in line with the Union’s goals.
The roles will be performed in line with the established Financial Policies and
Procedures as approved by the UNATU National Executive council.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Work
    in liaison with the General Secretary, manage Union budget according to
    agreed policies and procedures;
  • Prepare,
    examine and analyse accounting records, financial statements and other
    reports to assess accuracy, completeness and conformance to reporting and
    procedural standards;
  • Review
    taxes owed and prepare tax returns, ensuring compliance with payment,
    reporting and other tax requirements;
  • Appraise,
    evaluate and prepare record of inventory real property and equipment, to
    ascertain value
  • Keenly
    analyse business operations, trends, costs, revenues, financial
    commitments and obligations to project future revenues and expenses and
    provide advice;
  • Review
    bank reconciliations and bank records management through quick books
    accounting software;
  • Manage
    online banking in line with the financial procedural manual and management
    requirements;
  • Establish
    charts of accounts, and assign entries to proper accounts;
  • Keenly
    monitor expenditure to ensure that Union programme activities do not over
    spend and support staff to control expenditure effectively
  • Ensure
    that accounts are approved and submitted to the National Executive Council
    in time and according to Union’s minimum standards;
  • The
    incumbent will manage, support, coordinate and appraise departmental staff
    under line management in a timely, objective and constructive manner in
    accordance with UNATU’s HR policies and procedures.



Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The
    applicant must hold a Bachelor of Commerce or Bachelor of Accounting and
    Finance (Accounting Option) from a recognized institution;
  • Member
    of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda.
  • Possession
    of a Master’s Degree in any relevant field will be an added advantage.
  • At
    least seven years of experience as an Accountant in a reputable
    organization.
  • Good
    interpersonal, supervisory, communication and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated
    writing skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability
    to communicate effectively in English.
  • Proficient
    in use of the Accounting software.
