Mercy Corps has been fully registered in Uganda as an operational NGO.
Currently Mercy Corps has an office in Kampala and is implementing Food
Security programs which comprise of Water and Sanitation, Livelihood and
Agriculture and Conflict Mitigation Management Program in North and North
Eastern Uganda. We implement programs in the northern districts of Pader,
Kitgum, Agago, Lamwo, Kaabong, Abim and Kotido with funding from USAID, USDA,
Walmart Foundation, SDC, DFID as well as other private donations.
About USAID BRACED Program:
Mercy Corps was awarded a market-development focused 5-year USAID/Food
for Peace-funded program working in the northern half of Karamoja called
Building Resilience and Adaptation to Climate extremes and disaster (BRACED).
The project supports the immediate needs of program beneficiaries while also
promoting long term development by spurring systemic improvements in key
economic sectors in the Districts of Napak, Moroto, Kotido and Kaabong. Since
January 2015, BRACED has been supporting private Businesses ranging from agro
vets, entrepreneurs Ag-input retailers and also the SACCOs in providing
financial services to assist rural population to access secure savings and
business loans to strengthen businesses in a bid to build their resilience to
shocks and stresses.
Job Summary: The Land
Surveyor will provide direct support to beneficiaries that are dealing with
land disputes and seeking to officially register their land. The Land Surveyor
will work with key government stakeholders and communities to conduct surveys,
prepare reports, and help in the registration of lands in Napak and Moroto
District.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
  • The incumbent will also prepare and
    maintain sketches, maps, reports, and legal descriptions of surveys in
    order to describe, certify, and assume liability for work performed.
  • Verify accuracy of survey data, including
    measurements and calculations conducted at survey sites.
  • Direct or conduct surveys in order to
    establish legal boundaries for properties based on legal deeds and titles.
  • Record the result of surveys, including
    the shape, contour, location, elevation, and dimensions of land or land
    features.
  • Calculate heights, depths, relative
    position, property lines, and other characteristics of terrain.
  • Prepare or supervise preparation of all
    data, charts, plots, maps, records, and documents related to surveys.
  • The incumbent will write descriptions of
    property boundary surveys for use in deeds, leases, or other legal
    documents.
  • Plan and conduct ground surveys designed
    to establish baselines, elevations, and other geodetic measurements.
  • Search legal records, survey records, and
    land titles in order to obtain information about property boundaries in
    areas to be surveyed.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
  • The ideal candidate for the Mercy Corps
    Land Surveyor career job should hold a Diploma in Land Surveying and
    Mapping from a recognized institution. Possession of a degree in the same
    field is desirable
  • A minimum of two years of technical and
    practical work experience in land mapping and surveying
  • Basic knowledge of various Communal land protection,
    land tenure security, rangeland management and collaborative land
    management and administration.
  • Knowledge of institutional and/or
    administrative aspects relevant to the land in Karamoja.
  • Previous experience in organizational
    analysis and partner/project executing agency assessment.
  • Prior exposure and experience in conflict
    sensitive programme design and monitoring.
  • Ability to effectively land rights
    information to diverse audiences through a variety of media
  • Good team player, with good communication
    and diplomatic skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
    as part of a regional team and with international professionals.
  • Excellent analytical and information
    management skills.
  • Good organizational skills and ability to
    work under stress and in austere contexts of remote locations.
  • Highly flexible and creative in planning
    and problem solving.
  • Keen attention to detail, ability to
    follow procedures and meet deadlines and work independently and
    cooperatively with team members.
  • Proven excellence maintaining professional
    internal and external relationships.
  • A focus on building staff capacity
