Mercy Corps is an International NGO that exists to alleviate poverty
and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities.
Mercy Corps has been fully registered in Uganda as an operational NGO.
Currently Mercy Corps has an office in Kampala and is implementing Food
Security programs which comprise of Water and Sanitation, Livelihood and
Agriculture and Conflict Mitigation Management Program in North and North
Eastern Uganda. We implement programs in the northern districts of Pader,
Kitgum, Agago, Lamwo, Kaabong, Abim and Kotido with funding from USAID, USDA,
Walmart Foundation, SDC, DFID as well as other private donations.
About ECHO Program:
Mercy Corps is implementing an 18-month Directorate-General for
European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) funded program
around Livelihood Programs for South Sudanese refugees in Bidibidi Settlement,
Rhino Camp and Palorinya Settlement in Uganda. The program will focus on
building Livelihood activities and Agriculture resilience through agricultural
inputs and trainings, creation of VSLAs and IGAs activities.
Job Summary: The Livelihood
Program Assistant will offer support in the implementation of livelihood
activities Rhino Camp and Palorinya Settlement. As needed, Livelihood Program
Assistants will be expected to support all interventions of the program. Specific
activities will include strengthening relationships with existing community
structures, assessing beneficiaries; mobilizing community members for
assessments and registration of beneficiaries; post-distribution monitoring and
after-action-reviews and any other activity as needed. S/he will be a creative,
action-oriented problem solver with strong experience in partnership
management.
Key Duties and
Responsibilities:  
Planning, developing and implementing livelihood activities:
  • Work closely with Program Manager and
    Officers, mobilize community members, taking care to identify those who
    fit the selection criteria, for registration and other activities.
  • Support community sensitization
    activities. Identify specific topic areas of information needed and develop
    clear communications plans to effectively disseminate information.
  • Render support in the development of
    platform to distribute vouchers, seeds and tools and its implementation in
    the field.
  • Support farmers’ trainings and
    demonstration gardens.
Documentation and Reporting:
  • Render support in the development of
    livelihood training and farmers registration.
  • Support data collection activities
  • Update and maintain proper filing system
  • Prepare and submit timely weekly, monthly,
    and quarterly reports that will be indicative of program progress during
Training Farmers on:
  • Maintaining the quality of farms, crops,
    and livestock.
  • Preparing land or greenhouse beds for
    growing crops
  • Spraying fertilizer or pesticide solutions
    to control insects, fungi, and weeds
  • Harvesting and inspecting crops by hand
  • Irrigating farm soil and maintaining
    ditches or pipes and pumps
  • Overseeing and monitoring the activities
    of planting, weeding, or harvesting
Collaboration / Networking: Conduct himself/herself both
professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to Mercy
Corps Uganda and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission.
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
  • The ideal candidates for the Mercy Corps
    Livelihood Program Assistant jobs should hold Bachelor’s Degrees in a
    relevant field.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience in a
    similar position.
  • Background in humanitarian response
    activities preferred.
  • Possess excellent community mobilization
    skills
  • Good writing, communication, organization,
    prioritization and negotiating skills.
  • Good (English) verbal and written
    communication skills preferred.
  • Computer literacy with a full knowledge of
    office applications.
  • Keen attention to detail and proven
    ability to complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Excellent teamwork abilities and
    interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated flexibility, creativity and
    enthusiasm as well as a willingness to learn and to be continually
    adaptive within a dynamic and often self-directed working environment
    mandatory.
  • Proactive, problem-solving action orientation
    is essential.
  • Have the ability and curiosity to work
    comfortably and effectively in the cultural, relatively poor
    infrastructure of West Nile.
  • Be an excellent communicator, have a
    strong sense of humor, multi-tasker, and able to work difficult and often
    stressful environments.
  • Be committed to the work of Mercy Corps
    and the objectives of this program. They will demonstrate their dedication
    with a strong work ethic, attention to detail and creative problem
    solving.
