Job Summary:  The Senior
Manager – Products & Services  will
oversee the overall Product and Services portfolio and strategy and drive the
design and development of new products and services. The incumbent will develop
and manage the product delivery process for existing and new Products and
Services aligned to the Consumer and Enterprise roadmaps to meet business
objectives.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
Product Strategy:
  • Define MTN Uganda’s overall product portfolio
    and strategy and align it to the MTN Group business strategy, mission and
    vision.
  • Manage products & services in line with
    the MTN Group technology, procurement and business strategy and exploit
    new opportunities to scale
  • Define and implement the strategic capability
    and capacity requirements needed for the effective execution of this
    portfolio across the Design, Build and Go to market streams
  • Define a product ranging framework for
    Consumer and Enterprise product elements
  • Monitor and assess market, competitors and
    technological advancements and, when applicable, propose the development
    of products and services relevant to the portfolio
  • Develop and maintain a short, medium and long
    term strategy for the Product catalogue including product reviews, product
    performance and management
  • Identify areas in the product portfolio where
    value can be added / exploited further, areas where value is being
    destroyed and areas where value is latent, and act accordingly
  • Develop a model for expanding MTN’s products
    and services operating model beyond traditional mobile voice and data, in
    the ICT space.
  • Drive in life product management aligned to
    the delivery of the Segments and Business 
    objectives
  • Work with the IT and NWG teams to identify,
    design and develop new platform strategies to enable new and existing
    products and services
  • Develop and drive innovation with Group
    Commercial to meet the MTN Uganda business plan.
Product Design &
Build:
  • Design & Build optimal products and
    services, driven by segment requirements and technological advancements
  • Collate product development roadmap in conjunction
    with Consumer and Business segments and manage  the product development and
    implementation requirements of the business
  • Drive differentiation and growth through the
    development and management of optimal and innovative product portfolios
  • Predict future opportunities in products and
    services and innovations based on a segmented approach
  • Ensure Products and services specification
    during implementation delivers the full customer experience as defined by
    Segment
  • Work closely with segment managers, technical
    areas and suppliers to develop Products and services features relevant to
    the segment requirements
  • Consolidate appropriate technical product
    expertise in the VAS product group, digital products and voice, SMS and
    data per segment
  • Consolidate all product development
    requirements specific to segments & touch point e.g. consumer,
    Enterprise, digital and physical channels
  • Create a virtual team supporting the
    enablement of VAS, Voice & Data centers of excellence to design and
    develop appropriate requirement definition specifications
  • Ensure proper inclusion of all other relevant
    stakeholders (NWG / IS) in the design process and act as focal point of
    contact.
  • Ensure that all commercial agreements are in
    place with suppliers and vendors, in conjunction with Commercial Legal and
    finance.
  • Monitor and assess market, competitors and
    technological advancements and, when applicable, propose the development
    of products and services relevant to the portfolio
  • Articulate with relevant segments the product
    development plans to deliver on revenue and profitability targets
  • The incumbent will drive differentiation and
    growth through the development and management of optimal and innovative
    product portfolios
Product Solutions and
Delivery Implementation:
  • Manage the delivery of products and services
    across the business
  • Manage product quality and ensure delivery of
    internal clients and end-user requirements
  • Define, and ensure compliance with, adequate
    processes and systems for timeous delivery and quality of projects,
    including relevant products and projects’ documentation
  • Consolidate all development requirements for
    products and services across the Consumer and Enterprise development plans
  • Programme-manage delivery of products and
    services in the portfolio (planning, scheduling, controlling and risk
    management) with the support of Business Optimization
  • Ensure an acceptable standard of user
    experience in the development of Products and Services in accordance with
    Segment and Customer Experience requirements, and manage stakeholders on
    product implementation
  • Report on product performance results,
    including compilation of periodical activity, budget compliance and
    feedback reports
  • Align the Products and Services roadmap to IT
    and Network rollout plans to ensure delivery of features and capability
Product Management:
  • Manage Products and Services portfolio and
    design and implement action plans with segments to develop and implement
    action plans to drive up take, usage and revenue
  • Manage the product life cycle management
    strategy from conception, from Design, Build through to the Operate work
    stream
  • Provide product in-life management and
    performance support to ensure the profitability and relevance of product
    performance
  • Take ownership of the Product Catalogue and
    all product definitions and business rules
  • Manage the full product portfolio including
    reporting and sun setting of old platforms, products and services
  • Effective management of platform and
    technology suppliers to assist with the deployment of product solutions
    with MTN Uganda
  • Manage the Products and Services portfolio to
    identify and generate incremental growth opportunities for the business
Device Management:
  • Manage MTN Uganda’s device portfolio, in
    close coordination with Consumer/ Business Segment Management, Sales
    Channels and Procurement
  • Manage the device portfolio, vendor
    relationships, contracts and SLA’s
  • Align device technology strategies with the
    Network and IT Strategy to optimize the deployment and utilization of the
    network investment
  • Develop and maintain a strategy for devices
    and other hardware (e.g. data cards, SIMs), in close coordination with
    Sales Channels and Segment Managers
  • Develop and maintain a strategy for handsets
    and other hardware in close coordination with Sales, Consumer and Business
    Segment
  • Consolidate Sales and Segment requirements in
    terms of devices
  • Monitor and assess market, competitors and
    technological advancements in terms of devices and liaise with Consumer
    and Business Segments and Sales teams
  • Test devices to ensure an acceptable user experience
    on the MTN Network
  • Manage the device portfolio and vendor
    relationships in close coordination with Procurement, Sales, Consumer and
    Business Segments
  • Consolidate and manage devices forecasts
  • Define and manage the delivery of technical
    specifications for devices, following Consumer and Business Segments,
    Product managers, Sales and brand guidelines, in accordance with the
    desired user experience
  • Design, implement and manage a self-service
    terminal strategy
  • Report on results, including compilation of
    periodical activity, budget compliance and feedback reports
  • Align with Sales, Consumer and Business
    Segments towards the attainment of revenue, profitability and acquisition
    targets for devices
  • Manage the testing and final selection of
    devices with technical assistance from procurement, Supply Chain, Network
    and IT
  • Define and manage the delivery of technical
    specifications for devices
  • Provide support in all aspects of the roll
    out of an effective Devices Strategy for the business
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative research
    to gain a general understanding of purchase and usage behaviour in the
    Devices Portfolio
  • Assess the market, competitors and
    technological advancements in terms of devices and liaise with segment
    mangers and sales
  • Recommend changes to products and services
    based on the analysis of the trends and patterns identified in the
    real-time operational performance data
  • Find ways to improve purchase and usage
    patterns for devices through added features, pricing and distribution
    channels
Budget Management:
  • Forecast, plan and develop business cases
    that provide MTN with return on investment, and seek OPCO approval thereof
  • Base annual budgets on the identification of
    trends and patterns within the current operations and extrapolate these
    over the next planning cycle, taking any known changes in new products or
    services into consideration
  • Manage and optimise the budget, ensuring all
    expenditure is in line with the agreed budgets
  • Manage the Products and Services delivery
    process in alignment with technology teams
 Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The ideal candidate for the MTN Senior
    Manager – Products & Services career vacancy should hold a Bachelor’ Degree
    in Engineering
  • Significant exposure to Business/ Marketing
    concepts preferably via postgraduate qualification in Marketing or
    Business Administration
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in leading
    product management and product development 
    in the telecommunications industry (preferably mobile)
  • At least three years in similar positions, in
    fast-moving companies and contexts
  • Proven track record of successful management
    of broad product portfolio and significant number of successful product
    launches
  • Knowledge of consumer behaviour and market
    dynamics
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of market research
    principles
  • Broad understanding of mobile technology as
    well as national and global trends
  • Understanding of the factors impacting
    consumer demand
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of
    competitors’ products
  • Understanding of MTN Group strategy
  • Working knowledge and understanding of IT,
    NWG and key technology suppliers roadmaps
  • Financial understanding
  • Understand at a conceptual level key
    technology frameworks and standards impacting on product development
  • Analytical skills and Creative problem
    solving
  • Ability to take clear and economically sound
    decisions in a fast moving competitive environment
  • People leadership and management skills and
    demonstrated ability to build and energize teams
  • Strong “can-do“ attitude combined with an
    ability to take a step back and articulate the strategic implications of
