Job Summary:  The Resident
Underwriter will be responsible for developing facultative reinsurance businesses
in the Ugandan market and provide support to Nairobi Regional Office during
treaty renewal negotiations. The incumbent will run and Manage the Local
Representative Office but also be the face of Africa Re and the first point of
contact in the Ugandan market.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • The
    duties of the Resident Underwriter shall comprise amongst others:
  • Conduct
    regular visits to cedants to solicit for Facultative reinsurance business.
  • Assess
    facultative offers, provide quotations, negotiate and conclude placement
    terms with cedants.
  • Offer
    timely support to underwriters at the Nairobi Regional Office during
    treaty renewal negotiations.
  • Expeditiously
    follow – of premium collection for all accounts – both treaty and
    facultative
  • Actively
    coordinate with the Regional Office to have all major risks surveyed and
    following up implementation of recommendations.
  • Support
    in the reconciliation of accounts where face-to-face meetings are
    required.
  • Responsible
    for the collection and compiling of relevant insurance market data and
    general information about the market.
  • Assist
    to improve Africa Re claims service by ensuring all required procedures
    are explained and fulfilled – information and support documents are
    collected on time, visit sites for major losses etc.
  • Prepare
    and send periodic (weekly and monthly) reports covering all activities
    undertaken such as visit to cedants, quotations made, business closed etc.
  • Manage
    relationship with host governments, media and the public etc. in
    consultation with the Regional Office/Head Office.
  • Actively
    coordinate training, meeting and conference done by Africa Re.
  • Perform
    any other duties that may be assigned from time to time.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The
    ideal candidate should hold a First University degree plus Masters in
    relevant fields plus 7 years post qualification relevant qualitative work
    experience with emphasis in a relevant discipline preferably in Insurance
    or Actuarial Science OR
  • A
    First University degree in relevant fields plus full professional
    qualification, plus 7 years post qualification relevant qualitative work
    experience with emphasis in a relevant discipline preferably in Insurance
    or Actuarial Science. OR
  • First
    University degree in relevant field plus 11 years post qualification relevant
    qualitative work experience with emphasis in a relevant discipline
    preferably in Insurance or Actuarial Science.
  • Relevant
    Professional qualifications in Mathematics, Finance, Statistics and
    Economics is an advantage
  • Fluency
    in the English language. Working knowledge of French will be an added
    advantage.
  • The
    applicant should preferably be an East African citizen.
  • Excellent
    proven managerial skills/experience
  • Proven
    and very respected insurance professional in the market
  • Past
    insurance professional experience at a senior management level
  • Excellent
    marketing skills
  • Good
    and proven public relations skills
  • Deep
    knowledge of the Uganda Insurance market – practice, norms and the key
    stakeholders
  • Sound
    Insurance and reinsurance technical knowledge
  • Excellent
    reporting skills;
  • Excellent
    communication & Presentation skills
  • Data
    analysis & interpretation of financial statements
  • Past
    supervisory skills;
  • Possess
    the ability to quickly build good and sustainable relationship with
    stakeholders;
  • Excellent
    skills in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook) is required.
  • Ability
    to work under pressure.
