About Us:
Violence against children in schools is a widespread problem with
adverse social, educational and health consequences for children and
communities.  Raising Voices has
developed and published the Good School Toolkit to address the quality of
schools in developing countries. The Toolkit aims to create an operational
culture that prevents violence against children at school and an environment
conducive for promoting learning outcomes for children. In collaboration with
schools and organizations working in schools, the methodology has been rolled
out in more than 120 schools in Uganda. 
In partnership with Raising Voices, staff from the Gender, Violence and
Health Centre will carry out a study to evaluate the impact of Good Schools on
violence against children and children’s learning outcomes.  Plan International is also an implementing
partner. 
Raising Voices and GVHC staff will work together to coordinate the Good
Schools Study.  We will use a range of
approaches to measure the impact of the Good Schools toolkit on violence and
educational outcomes in primary schools in Uganda.  The main activities will be a cluster
randomised controlled trial and a qualitative study; these will be augmented by
a process evaluation, and a cost-effectiveness study. 
The Gender, Violence and Health Centre (GHVC):
The Gender, Violence and Health Centre is a multi- disciplinary
cross-departmental research group at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical
Medicine, that works with partners around the world to conduct action-oriented,
intervention based research on gender-based violence and health.
Raising Voices:
Raising Voices works to prevent interpersonal violence that happens in
the home, in the communities and within institutions that community members use
on a regular basis. Our work is organized into two departments; prevention of
violence against women (VAW) and prevention of violence against children (VAC).
Job Summary: The research fellow will primarily coordinate the
Good Schools Study in Uganda.  Good
Schools in an ongoing cluster randomized controlled trial.  The post-holder will be expected to
coordinate and manage trial activities, support local field staff, participate
in study design and development, and contribute to analysis, write-up and
dissemination of findings.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
1. Research:
  • Assist in the preparation of our trial
    follow-up survey, including contributing to the design of the study and
    development of the questionnaire
  • Coordinate pilot-testing of the
    questionnaire, organization of fieldwork logistics in conjunction with
    Kampala-based staff
  • Coordinate survey data collection and data
    entry and management in conjunction with the larger team
  • Offer input to the development of
    monitoring systems for ongoing monitoring by partner NGO staff
  • Update and keep records on the research
    progress and main findings to be shared with project’s partners; to liaise
    with the other research stakeholders, informing of progress in data
    collection and analysis; discussing findings and next steps.
  • Contribute to the development of
    publications and other forms of dissemination material.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:          
  • The research fellow must hold a masters’
    degree  in epidemiology/public
    health with a focus on research.
  • Past experience in organizing and
    coordinating teams, including providing training and day-to-day
    supervision
  • Proven ability to manage projects,
    write-up and communicate findings. 
  • Working knowledge of quantitative and
    qualitative research methods and data analysis
  • Excellent organisational and interpersonal
    skills including a proven ability to work both independently and as part
    of a team to meet project deadlines. 
  • Proficiency in using STATA, Access, Excel,
    Word and PowerPoint.
  • Past experience with data management is an
    advantage
  • Experience working on violence against
    children will also be a bonus
  • Exposure and experience in working in
    developing countries is highly desired
  • Previous trial experience
Salary and conditions of appointment:
The post will be full-time until September 2014 with the possibility of
extension, based in Kampala. The appointment will be made on the School’s
Research Fellow scale, grade 6 £36,378-£41,313 per annum prorated.
