Job Summary: The School Legal
Officer will be charged with the effective and efficient management of the
Legal Section of the School, provision of legal advisory services and ensure
effective management of legal and contractual risks.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership and ensure efficient
    and effective management of the staff and resources in the Legal Section.
  • Provide legal advisory and interpretation
    services to management and Council to ensure statutory compliance with
    existing laws and regulatory requirements.
  • Review and draft contracts, agreements and
    internal policies and ensure that they are in compliance with all statutory
    or legal requirements.
  • Assessment of outstanding litigation and
    liaise with and manage external lawyers.
  • Continuously monitor compliance with
    statutory obligations and advise management.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly reports for
    the Section for the consideration of management
  • Prepare, negotiate, review and draft
    documentation for business transactions and prepare and advise management
    in compliance with all statutory or legal requirements
  • Offer technical leadership, supervision,
    training and development of Section staff ensuring an effective and
    motivated team.
  • Provide legal protection and risk
    management advice to management especially on contract management.
  • Liaise with the HR department in
    conducting performance appraisals and ensure competency and training gaps
    are addressed.
    Follow-up and update management on court matters and attending court
    hearings for and on behalf of the School.
  • Review and advice on MOUs between MUBS and
    other organizations including donors.
  • Do any other duties as may be assigned by
    the Principal. 
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
  • The applicant should hold an Honor’s
    Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) and Diploma in Legal Practice or its equivalent
    from (a) reputable Institution(s).
  • Must be a citizen of Uganda aged between
    30 and 50 years.
    An enrolled advocate of the High Court of Uganda
  • Possess a valid practicing certificate.
  • A minimum of four (4) years experience in
    an increasingly responsible position in a medium-sized organization.
  • Possession of a Master of Laws degree from
    a reputable institution will be an added advantage.
 Personal Competencies: Strong
leadership and managerial skills, Excellent relationship management and
communication skills, Excellent analytical and writing skills, Ability to
provide independent advice to management on highly technical legal matters, Very
Good listening and inter-personal skills, Good team player , Good negotiator,  Familiar with drafting agreements and
preparing court documents
Knowledge about the Ugandan legal framework of the Higher Education Sub-sector
in Uganda.
