Job Summary: The Deputy News
Editor will lend a hand to the News Editor in coordinating news gathering
operations, obtaining well researched and most up to date reports on daily
events and ensure written copy meets established editorial objectives,
journalistic ethics, house style and is delivered within set deadlines.

Key Duties and
Responsibilities:
Responsibilities:
- Deputizes the News Editor in all matters pertaining
to news room operations - Assesses political, social and economic climate
and anticipates likely developments for coverage - Briefs reporters and advises on angles to take
on stories daily - Guides reporters and writers on coverage and
writing of stories - Coaches and develops the skills of the
reporters - Ensures that reporters write stories and
deliver them within the set deadlines - Reviews the written stories to ensure they meet
editorial objectives, house style and journalistic ethics - Supervises Bureau Chiefs and Correspondents and
that the best quality stories are filed for Regional specials - Adheres to zero tolerance for Deadlines control
- Customer Service: Maximum 24 hour turn around
for resolution of complaints - Perform any other duties as requested
Qualifications, Skills and
Experience:
Experience:
- The applicant should possess a University
Degree and/or professional qualification in journalism. - Five to seven years working experience in a
newsroom - At least two years in a supervisory position
- Ability to work in a stressful,
deadline-oriented environment - General knowledge of and an interest in local
and world events - Excellent writing and editing skills, with good
understanding of editorial practices, writing and editing requirements in
a busy newsroom - Possess a good eye for detail, with excellent
spelling, grammar and punctuation skills. - Good organizational skills and ability to work
effectively with the team and collate material from multiple sources - Ability to track, review and manage team
performance effectively - Strong interpersonal skills & communication
skills - Excellent analytical skills
