The Research and Evaluation Unit supports BRAC in designing development
programmes, assessing progresses, documenting achievements, and undertaking
rigorous evaluations of its interventions, which cover diverse dimensions of
development including microfinance, agriculture, education and health.


Job Summary: BRAC is seeking a Research Coordinator to oversee
and lead the portfolio of research projects in Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan,
Sierra Leone and Liberia. The Research and Evaluation Unit works with
development and academic partners to evaluate
approaches to solving development problems, to communicate what works and does
not work in development, and to scale up successful projects. The Research
Coordinator will manage a portfolio of approximately 25 projects. These
projects span a range of areas, such as microfinance, agriculture, education,
youth and health. As part of its supervisory role, the Research Coordinator
will be based in Kampala and work closely with the regional and local offices
to ensure research projects are working within the relevant policies and
procedures.


Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Ensure project adherence in the field to
    general research design, sample selection, data management and analysis,
    and overall project management.
  • Oversee project financial management
    Work with relevant departments to ensure sound human resource development
    and operational management of projects.
  • Directly supervise and mentoring project
    researchers (Research Associates, Research Assistants, Field Supervisors),
    and help with continuation and on-boarding of new research staff.
  • Promote inter-project best practices and
    take a lead in sharing best practices with projects through periodical
    meetings and training opportunities.
  • Attend meetings with development
    organizations, universities, and government officials.
  • Support the dissemination of results via
    presentations and reports to academic and non-academic audiences.
  • Maintain effective communication between
    BRAC International, Country Representative and Program me Managers for all
    developments on the research projects in Uganda.



Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The applicant should possess postgraduate
    degree, preferably Ph.D, in economics, agricultural economics, development
    economics, sociology, anthropology, rural development, or any other
    related field.
  • At least 10 years of experience in
    conducting social science or economic field research. Experience in Africa
    is strongly preferred.
  • Comprehensive experience supervising data
    collection, teams of field workers, and survey design and implementation.
  • Cultural sensitivity and demonstrated
    ability to work successfully with diverse constituencies
  •  Experience in conducting field research
    in developing countries.
  • Strong budgeting and financial management
    skills.
  •  Experience with presenting research
    findings at public forums, including to non-research focused audiences.
  • Strong written and oral communication
    skills and complete fluency in English
  • Excellent analytical and demonstrated
    ability to write reports and publish findings in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Ability to combine quantitative and
    participatory research methods.
  • Experience with data management,
    statistics, and advanced knowledge of Stata or any other statistical
    packages.
  • Strong quantitative skills and familiarity
    with randomized controlled trials.
  • Ability to identify relevant partners,
    maintain existing relations, and build new linkages and effectively
    facilitate stakeholder processes on poverty issues.

Remuneration: Salaries and benefits will be competitive
compared to other regional organizations; remuneration is commensurate with
experience and qualifications.
