United Nations MONUSCO Jobs – Engineering Technician (Water and Sanitation Engineer)

 Reports to: Field Engineering Officer

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Guide
    the plumbing team in Entebbe Support Base carrying out day to day
    preventative maintenance; Design a sound operation and maintenance plan
    for both the Base wide Improvement Plan and the currently existing
    plumbing systems;
  • Directly
    supervise he implementation of newly designed water and sewage systems
    component in the Base wide Improvement Plan according to the current and
    future demands and recommended justified necessary amendments;
  • Offer
    the necessary guidance and support to the plumbing team to achieve timely
    and quality implementation of activities;
  • Conduct
    regular field visits to inspect works, review progress and
    determine/receive feedback from the team and the beneficiaries regarding
    emerging challenges and gaps in new plans, providing timely feedback and
    suggestions for changes to the Field Engineering Officer;
  • Organize
    regular project review sessions through participatory methodologies
    involving beneficiaries and other stakeholders In the areas of
    intervention, with the aim of establishing and/or verifying emerging
    needs, gaps and priorities, and communicate these to the Field Engineering
    Officer as part of a continuous program review and improvement process;
  • Compile
    progress reports from the various activity reports as per established
    monitoring plans, formats and schedules and submit to the Field
    Engineering Officer;
  • Ensure
    proper contracting, field level oversight, works certification and payment
    preparation processes for contractors and other service providers engaged
    to execute plumbing and sanitation works; Contribute towards preparation
    of budgets and proposals through analysts of field data and actual costs
    incurred on activity implementation;
  • Assist
    the technical team with preparation of bills of quantities and costing of
    activities;
  • Identity
    staff training needs and recommend on-job or other capacity building
    measures in close consultation with Field Engineering Officer;
  • Ensure
    team motivation and team work and promote open communication and feedback
    channels;
  • Perform
    any other duties as assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The
    candidate should possess a bachelor’s degree  in Water Engineering, Civil Engineering,
    Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering field.
  • Seven
    years’ experience with thorough technical knowledge of water supply
    construction and maintenance;
  • Significant
    experience with industrial and household level sanitation, hygiene
    promotion, participatory planning and environmental conservation;
  • Experience
    of collaboratively working with local authorities, contractors and service
    providers.

under pressure, often in difficult and demanding conditions
Technological awareness: Understands applicability and limitations of
technology to the work in the field and actively seeks to apply technology to
appropriate tasks.
Planning and Organizing:  Ability to establish priorities and to plan,
coordinate and monitor own work plan and lead team efforts.
Communication: Good communication skills, demonstrate
ability to develop and maintain effective work relationships and motivate
positive staff performance.
