Job Summary: 
The Head of Direct Sales will primarily interpret and communicate
overall Retail Strategy as well as the strategy for the Direct Department
He/ She will also be responsible for the overall performance of the
Direct Sales segment in-country (currently comprising direct sales, Scheme
loans, Home loans and Asset Based Finance Propositions).
Key Duties &
Responsibilities:
1. People Management – 60%
  • Work with the direct reports to achieve
    sales & service objectives through focused sales generating
    activities, providing feedback to the branch managers on their
    performance.
  • Work with scheme Relationship managers to
    develop customer approaches for relationships and providing regular
    coaching and feedback to the relationship managers on their progress
    towards achieving objectives.
  • Coach scheme loans Relationship Managers
    on credit process and criteria to ensure that they become experts at
    developing proposals for potential customers.
  • Build and develop a high performing team
    through embedding performance development and coaching. Ensure that direct
    reports provide regular coaching and feedback to their teams in order to
    develop them.
  • Discuss and finalize performance
    Development  Plans and ratings for Direct reports
  • Determine and manage Training Needs
    analysis and succession plans direct reports and ensure they do the same
    for all their staff.
  • May be involved in the interview process
    for Asset Finance advisors, Home loans advisors, direct sales consultants
    on request from direct reports, but the individual mangers ultimately
    select the candidate.
  • Directly responsible for recruiting direct
    reports.
  • Effective resource management/planning
    that reflect current and future business requirements, ensuring that the
    correct balance of numbers, skills and experience, by playing an active
    role in recruitment and exits. This includes evaluating requests from
    direct reports for additional staff, and may agree overall headcount
    requirement with then retail Director on an annual basis.
  • Review patterns of staff attendance, based
    on monthly absence statistics (annual leave, sick leave, family
    responsibility leave, maternity leave, study leave etc) compiled by Branch
    managers.
  • Sign off leave requests received from
    direct reports.
  • Initiate discipline charges when required.
    Follow the discipline process, together with HR and an independent
    chairperson. Dismissals are signed off the first disciplinary enquiry.
    Also acts as first level escalation point for grievance cases.
  • Motivate staff and ensure they are
    recognized through the Barclays Africa recognition schemes
  • Create and e] empowering environment for
    direct sales and scheme loans staff, encouraging individual ownership and
    initiative, maximize sales opportunities
 2.  Business
Management – 30%
With input from the Retail Director agree targets and take accountability
for the overall achievement of performance objectives for the sales function in
terms of:

Sales growth and income contribution

Costs performance
·        
Risk and rigour management
·        
Cascade sales targets and reach agreement with
individual Direct reports
Budget accountability:
·        
Accountable for achieving annual sales targets
as agreed. Such targets include; product lines, utilized and income generated.
Monitoring of progress towards achieving targets is done on a monthly basis.
·        
Sign off on invoices involves and all payments
within overall annual cost budget as agreed with the Retail Director.
·        
Authorize requests from Direct reports for
capital expenditure within budget
Brand, product and business propositions:
  • Project manage implementation of new sales
    initiatives rolled out by Retail function
  • Provide clear direction to direct reports
    on Direct Sales business objectives, translating and prioritizing into
    business performance measures at individual level.
  • Based on analysis of customer requirements
    (a as result of formal customer research or informal customer feedback),
    request that new products within current ranges, or new product ranges
    from the current set available in Barclays Retail in-country, be added to
    the portfolio of products then segment can offer. Interact with in-country
    product teams to identify such improvements.
  • Arrange implementation of new product sets
    with assistance from specialist product managers and ensure that direct
    reports are prepared for the implementation.
  • Work within-country marketing to produce
    annual marketing plans to support the direct sales segment. Include
    customization and distribution of key messages as received from the
    regional office segment head.
  • Occasionally contact key Direct Sales customers,
    or, on request from Direct reports, to resolve particular service issues
    or to support sales initiatives.
  • Review balanced score card statistics
    compiled by direct sales manager, Home loans, asset finance and scheme
    loans Relationship managers on a monthly basis.
  • Discuss progress with them and ensure that
    exceptional performance is recognized.
  • Also agree action plans for those that are
    not meeting targets, and review progress towards such action plans during
    the next month.
 3. Contribution to the Team – 5
%
Deputize for the retail Director when required
  • Provide honest, direct and constructive
    feedback to fellow team members
  • Share knowledge experience and best
    practice with team members and other Retail 
 4. Risk and Compliance-5 %
  • Pursue your own development to increase
    personal effectiveness and acknowledge strengths and areas of development.
  • Set annual performance development
    objectives with the Branch Manager.
Qualifications, Skills &
Experience:
  • The Head of Sales should possess a degree
    or relevant experience on a front-line banking sales/ marketing/ service
    environment
  • At least three years experience in a
    Retail Banking management environment
  • Experience in leadership of a diverse/
    large team
  • Working experience in a customer
    Relationship Management –focused environment
  • Project management experience 
  • Commercial awareness and customer focus
  • Awareness and understanding of Barclay’s
    product and services to generate leads.
  • A working knowledge and understanding of
    relevant legislation eg. KYC, Anti-money laundering, banking code, service
    standards, health and safety, standards etc.
  • A good understanding of the outlets
    performance objectives-growth of sales, risk, rigour, cost control and
    income contribution.
  • A sound knowledge of the bank’s internal
    departments, systems & procedures.
