About Bank:
Our client, one of the leading commercial Banks in Uganda, wishes to
appoint a dynamic and result- oriented Head of Credit function.
Job
Summary:
The Head of Credit will be responsible for the overall credit
strategy, policies, arid framework implementation for the bank in accordance
with its direction as set out by the Board of Directors. The Head of Credit
will also be responsible for ensuring that the bank retains its competitive
position in the banking industry and lending business in Uganda. He/she will
also coordinate and partner effectively with Business Leadership to deliver
value and competitive advantage and efficient and effective management of the
resources of the department.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Plan and
    coordinate management of all credit functions including commercial and
    corporate lending, Retail, SME lending and credit products development;
  • Track trends in
    the banking industry and propose adjustments/changes to the bank’s credit
    policies, strategy and procedures to ensure the bank retains its
    competitive position and lending business in Uganda;
  • Apply professional
    insight and understanding to the management of the bank’s entire loan
    portfolio and ensuring portfolios growth;
  • Drive all credit
    activities including the mobilisation of borrowers, the underwriting, and
    approval of loans, the review, and submission to the Board and Management
    credit Committees of large credit applications, and solving loan problems;
  • Ensure the bank’s
    compliance with all regulatory requirements in the areas of credit,
    including compliance with lending limits, concentration, non-performance,
    and classification, provisioning and writing off debts;
  • Provide retail and
    commercial credit risk management expertise and advice generally, through
    credit financial projection inputs for the formulation/annual update of
    the strategic plan, corporate budget and division’s plan and budget;
  • Ensure
    regularization of the excesses/installment an-ears in line with Credit
    Policy and in close collaboration with sales team, branch managers, and
    credit administration and control team;
  • Participate in the
    continual review and update of the bank’s credit policies, guidelines, and
    practices, in line with changes in credit risk and the bank’s business
    priorities;
  • Ensure the
    independent review of credit facilities, recommendation to Management
    Credit Committee (MCC) or even decline proposals as applicable is
    administered within the mandate of the board and the defined guidelines by
    the bank;
  • Provide necessary
    guidance and leadership to subordinate teams to ensure effective execution
    of the division’s activities;
  • Review the
    periodic divisional reports and ensure timely generation/compilation of management
    information reports;
    Provide credit training support for business and relationship management
    team;
  • Monitor daily
    movement of credit portfolio and ensure a healthy portfolio throughout the
    year;
  • Ensure that credit
    delivery is effective, responsive and meets customer satisfaction; and
  • Ensure recovery of
    non-performing assets and provide remedial actions for all overdue
    recoveries. 
Qualifications,
Skills and Experience:
  • The job holder
    should possess a good degree in Economics, Statistics or any business
    related discipline from a recognized university.
  • A Post graduate
    degree in a related field will be an added advantage.
  • The candidate must
    have possess a minimum of 14 years banking experience with not less than 5
    years in core credit operations in banking industry and strategic credit
    oversight role.
  • Proven ability to
    manage credit portfolio and sound awareness of ffends and recent developments
    in the banking industry;
  • Deep understanding
    of credit risk management trends in the local & international financial
    services industry;
  • Ability to
    understand and analyze financial & cash-flow statements and make
    useful deductions for decision-making;
  • Skills in
    effective management of financial assets and liabilities of a commercial
    bank;
  • Very good
    operational management and resource planning/coordination skills;
  • Demonstrated skills
    in budget preparation and monitoring; and
  • Strong
    interpersonal and communication skills, ability to multi task and function
    effectively under pressure, and strong organizational and people
    management skills.
