CIAT is seeking to recruit highly motivated individuals to join the team at the Kampala Office. The individuals should be capable of serving a multicultural and multidisciplinary team. The positions will be based at the National Agricultural Research Laboratories- Kawanda.

Job Summary: The Research Assistant -Plant Breeding- works within framework of the Pan-Africa Bean Research Alliance (PABRA) to conduct strategic bean improvement research that contributes to, and complements, breeding research activities of PABRA’s NARS breeders. The Research Assistant-Plant Breeding works to develop segregating populations, evaluate germplasm, and maintain nurseries and elite germplasm with the aim of developing new improved common bean varieties.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Work with the Bean Breeder to identify and select common bean lines exhibiting desirable traits.
  • Execute crossing programs in consultation with the Bean Breeder.
  • Work with the technical assistants to ensure adequate seed multiplication and purification of elite breeding lines and released varieties.
  • Work with the Breeder to establish, maintain and distribute breeding nurseries, as well as conduct replicated yield trials (RYTs).
  • Work with the Breeder and the breeding team to develop a data management system for the regional breeding activities in Kawanda and in the PABRA network.
  • Work with the Breeder to analyse breeding data, write project reports and publish research findings.
  • Support and train technical and field staff in performing tasks to ensure high quality of research output and timely delivery of results.
  • Work with the Breeder to conduct on-farm field experiments and demonstrations for projects with such components.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • Masters degree in Agriculture Crop Science or Plant Breeding and Seed systems.
  • Working knowledge of plant pathology and molecular „ breeding is an added advantage.
  • One to two years experience in crop production or has worked with germplasm.
  • Must have supervisory skills and the ability to deal with farmers and cooperators.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, but also participate as a team member in accomplishment of duties.
  • Willingness to travel in the region.
