Public Health Mental Nurse Job at Action Africa Help Uganda

Job Title: Public Health Mental Nurse
Reports to: Clinical Officer
Duty Station: Kyangwali Refugee Settlement, Uganda
Job Summary: To provide a comprehensive nursing package that include preventive, curative and health education to support and encourage a healthy living culture within the target population.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Attend to mentally sick people in the Health Units.
  • Provide regular follow-up of discharged cases.
  • Liaise with Community Health Workers and Community Social Workers on identification and management of cases.
  • Sensitize the Schools and communities on identification, prevention and management of mental illnesses.
  • To liaise with community leaders to sensitize the community on drug and substance abuse; and to initiate community programs that reduce boredom and idleness.
  • Maintain personal contact with patients, take note of their complaints, carry out corrective measure and escalate for further action if necessary.
  • To follow up referred cases outside the settlement.
  • Plan and request drugs appropriately.
  • Conduct and attend trainings and meetings related to mental health.
  • Implement special programs, out reaches related to mental health in collaboration with supervisors.
  • Coordinate with other health sector personnel to implement quality integrated services to the communities.
  • Prepare and submit periodic and progress reports covering the mental health sector.
  • Manage patients with confidentiality and adherence to the professional code of conduct.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications, Skills & Experience:
  • A certificate in Comprehensive Nursing(3yrs)
  • A certificate of Registration from the national professional nursing body
  • At least One year’s experience in similar.
  • A certificate in Psychiatric Nursing(3yrs)
  • A certificate of Registration from the national professional nursing body
  • At least One year’s experience in similar.
  • Excellent inter-personal and communication skills
  • A good command of both written and spoken English
  • Patient, understanding and of a pleasant character
  • Computer literate with ability to use Microsoft Office
  • People Management skills
  • Able to coach and develop others
  • Ability to mobilize different audiences
  • Commitment to the organizational values
