About AFRICHILD:
AFRICHILD is an organisation established under a partnership between Makerere University, ChildFund International, TPO Uganda, Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, and Columbia University, USA. The Centre will be governed by a Technical Advisory Board. The goal of the Centre is to serve as a child focused multi-disciplinary training and research centre that contributes to knowledge and skills development in child protection work.
The Centre will be based within the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in Makerere University Campus. The Centre’s programs will include: action oriented research; policy analysis and policy influencing; research capacity building among practitioners, government technocrats and academia; curriculum development and professional child focused training programs. The Centre also envisions improving practice and strengthening linkages between academic institutions and practitioner organizations.
Job Summary: The Co-Director will be responsible for driving the overall strategies and growth objectives of the Centre.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
1.      Research and program development
·         Ensure that Centre activities promote learning and knowledge management
·         Articulate a research agenda for the Centre and follow through its implementation.
·         Support Principal Investigators in pursuing the research agenda.
·         Continuously study changes in context of operation and align centre objectives accordingly.
·         Develop a resource centre and reference library and make it accessible to users.
·         Management
·         Human resource management
·         Support the Technical Advisory Board in its business
·         Prepare periodic reports
·         Oversee the development of work plans and the implementation of program activities
·         Ensure that centre abides to principles of corporate governance. Put in place operational manuals.
2.     Strategy and growth
·         Develop and implement strategic plans for the Centre, technical backstopping, advocacy and knowledge management
·         Ensure Centre programs work towards influencing national policy and practice
·         Pursue partnerships with government and non-governmental actors that contribute to growth of the Centre
3.     Fundraising and Resource Mobilization
·         Ensure that the Centre has a vibrant website with resourceful depositions
·         Lead the Centre’s resource mobilization efforts
·         Build capacity of local researchers to mobilize and access research grants.
·         Innovate initiatives that can sustain the activities of the centre
·         Develop and prepare Proposals
4.     Partnership development and networking
·         Ensure good working relationships between the centre and its partners.
·         Seek and maintain local and global partnership in pursuance of the Centre agenda.
·         Build relations for growth between northern academic institutions and the Centre.
·         Link the centre to global networks for learning and sharing.
·         Liaise with the CoDirector who oversees relations with Makerere University
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
·         Postgraduate degree preferably at PhD level in Social Work, Social Sciences or related disciplines
·         Experience working with children and young people and/or studies in the field of children is an advantage
·         Strong management experience over 5 years
·         Demonstrable research and publishing experience.
·         Experience fundraising and managing multi-donor and research grants
·         Ability and confidence to network globally
