The Hunger Project Uganda is an international NGO committed to achieving the sustainable end of hunger and poverty through an integrated approach to rural development under the framework of the Millennium Development Goals.
The Hunger Project seeks to recruit two (2) qualified individuals to assist in implementation of the project activities under the epicenter strategy for grassroots community empowerment.
Job Summary: The Assistant Program Officer Position is a fulltime two year renewable contract to implement the day today activities of The Hunger Project Uganda catalytic projects, under the epicenter strategy.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
a.      Mobilize community members and train volunteer leaders called “animators” through workshops that emphasize the importance of changing mindsets from resignation to “we can end hunger and poverty in our villages”.
b.      Oversee the day to day implementation of the following programs: food production and food security program, epicenter income generating projects, environmental awareness building and training program, Vision, Commitment and Action(VCA) training program, HIV/ AIDS & gender inequality, Functional Adult Literacy (FAL) and early childhood education program, women’s empowerment trainings and microfinance program.
c.       In collaboration with the Epicenter Committee members, animators, epicenter microfinance and health unit staff, prepares weekly, monthly and annual reports to THP Uganda Director of Programs.
d.      Ensure the localization of the eight (8) Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) so that they are well understood by the rural communities.
e.      Supervise the day to day activities of the Epicenter Committees and animators, ensuring that they operate from a commitment that is consistent with THP principles.
f.        Provide proper and timely accountabilities for the project funds to the Finance Officer.
g.      Ensures proper maintenance of project assets and facilities.
h.     Maintains proper and up to date record of project assets and inventory in the office.
i.        Conduct training activities for partners to empower them to participate fully in program implementation.
j.        Develop networks and partnerships with other development partners and District Local Government for delivery of better services and avoid duplication of services.
k.      Guide the epicenter leadership in lobbying and advocating for the marginalized communities – women, elderly, children, and those with disabilities etc,
l.        Develop capacity of THP Uganda rural partners to create good leaders who take lead in development of the communities
m.   In collaboration with the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer, conduct monitoring and evaluation of the project and its impact to the rural communities.
n.     Performs any other duties as may be assigned by supervisors from time to time.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
·         University Degree from recognized institution in the following fields; Agriculture/Agribusiness, development studies and social sciences.
·         At least three (3) years relevant experience preferably with an international NGO working in areas of food and income security, HIV/AIDS and gender inequality, health and nutrition, natural resource management and advocacy.
·         Ability to plan, budget and account for project funds
·         Ability to prioritize, multi-task and work under pressure amidst competing demands with minimum supervision, pro-active mindset “Yes I can do” attitude.
·         Should be able to manage costs and maximize income of the epicenter IGAs.
·         Excellent report writing and communication skills.
·         Should be honest with exceptional character, a team player and a self starter.
·         Knowledge of the local area and local languages spoken
·         Ability to learn and/or ride a motorcycle
