Law Degree Jobs at Uganda Law Society (ULS) – Legal Aid and Pro Bono Assistant

The Uganda Law Society (ULS) is a body corporate established by the Uganda Law Society Act (Cap 276) of 1956 as the representative body of the legal profession. The Uganda Law Society currently has a membership of over One Thousand Seven Hundred (1700) advocates. Its mission is to improve the professional standards of members of the legal profession and to promote human rights and the rule of law in Uganda by assisting the Government and the Judiciary in the administration and practice of law for the benefit of the men and women of Uganda.
Avocats Sans Frontieres (ASF) is an independent international non-governmental organization founded in Belgium in 1992, with the aim of contributing to the creation of equitable societies in which the law and its institutions serve the most vulnerable. ASF has been working in Uganda since 2007 on various projects to enhance access to justice for the vulnerable, including the combating of torture and domestic violence, as well as projects on pre-trial detention and child trafficking.
The ULS and ASF have partnered to run a 2-year project whose objective is to work with the legal profession to provide strategic support to access to justice initiatives in Uganda. ULS and ASF therefore seek qualified and experienced individuals to fill the position above to run the above project.
Duties & Responsibilities
·         He/she will assist in monitoring of the legal aid mechanism and pro Bono scheme, and support the proper functioning of the database once set up in ULS.
·         He/she will be responsible for supporting the functions of the managers of the legal aid and pro Bono schemes, as well as the monitoring specialist.
·         He/she would assist ULS monitoring specialist staff in transfer of data from existing sources to the new database,
·         He/she should know the full operation of the pro-Bono scheme and legal aid mechanism.
·         Provide ongoing assistance to responsible staff on proper entry of data and generation of reports, and conduct troubleshooting as needed.
·         The  ideal  candidate will  have considerable experience in information management organizational and communication skills.
Qualifications, Skills & Experience
·         LLB & post graduate diploma in legal practices.
·         At least 1 year of professional experience in legal aid service provision
·         Considerable experience in information management, as well as excellent organizational and communication skills
Knowledge, Skills & Personal Attributes
·         Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
·         Strong analysis and strong reporting skills.
·         Excellent one to one and group communication presentation skills.
·         Understanding of various donors’ requirements
·         Experience working with computer software packages.
·         Project management skills.
·         Result oriented with ability to work under pressure, independently and with limited supervision.
