HIV Prevention Officer Social Work Job at Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau

The Uganda Protestant Medical Bureau (UPMB) is a leading Christian Organization coordinating over 260 health centres and 17 hospitals all over Uganda. UPMB is inviting applications from suitably qualified individuals to implement a five year Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funded HIV program within its network. This will be through a UPMB program of National Expansion and Strengthening of sustainable HIV/ TB (NESH) services in Uganda
Reports to: Clinical Services Specialist
Department: Health
Location: Kampala, (with frequent travel to the Field)
Job Objective: To coordinate all the NESH prevention related activities in all the targeted Districts. The job holder will be responsible for overseeing the implementation of HIV prevention activities i.e. (ABC, HBCHCT &MARP) geared towards strengthening the prevention component
ART program through the provision of capacity building at hospital and community level. The job holder will also be responsible for assessing and monitoring of quality HIV health care and as well as networking and building partnerships with the stakeholders. .
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assess new NESH implementing Health facilities for readiness to initiate ART Prevention Activities
  • Assess quality of community support activities relating to ART in and around potential NESH implementing Health facilities
  • Assist NESH implementing Health facilities in developing their community program for ART during site activation process
  • Identify training needs, plan trainings and facilitate training sessions on prevention activities.
  • Work with ART health Care team to establish and strengthen prevention activities within NESH implementing Health facilities for improved quality of patient care.
  • Coordinate and carry out prevention technical assistance visits to the NESH implementing Health facilities.
  • Assist in development of prevention messages directed to a specific target population.
  • Create linkages between clinical & community aspect of the project.
  • Provide on the job training to NESH implementing Health facilities’ staff
  • Develop and implement a monitoring plan for evaluating the performance of prevention activities and community outreach programs at NESH implementing Health facilities.
  • Network with other organizations involved in HIV prevention activities and promote linkages between NESH implementing Health facilities and organizations providing HIV support services in the community.
  • Ensure project activities comply with national guidelines and policies for HIV prevention.
  • Ensure availability of appropriate job aides and education materials on HIV prevention at the NESH implementing Health facilities.
  • Identify & document best practices and share key lessons learnt on HIV prevention strategies.
  • Assist in conducting focus group discussions with NESH implementing Health facilities’ staff and community volunteers.
  • Foster strong relationships between the Diocese and NESH implementing Health facilities in promoting HIV prevention.
  • Participate in proposal development in order to attract new resources complementary to NESH.
Required Qualifications & Experience
  • Degree in Counselling, Social Work or Community Development or related field with 5 years minimum working experience.
  • At least 5 years working in HIV/AIDS, ART, HBC or hospice environment at community level.
  • Must be proficient with and able to teach basic facts on HIV/AIDS.
  • Trained in HCT and HIV care counselling as per the national curriculum.
  • Personal / Professional Skills:
  • Honest and a high degree of integrity, Analytical skills with an eye for detail, Very good communication skills, a team builder and player.
  • Demonstrated counselling skills and strong understanding of HIV/AIDS related issues in the Ugandan context.
  • Familiarity with adult learning principles / techniques and demonstrated ability in design and facilitate learning opportunities for adults.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and to organize and prioritize competing activities.
  • Computer skills (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Power Point)
